I like the variation in distances you did. Not easy recatching a quality focus when pulling tighter on something that disappears quite quickly.

Nice work..

I like the last one in the first post. Like the colors instead of being mostly yellow/white.

Just ordered me a Remote Shutter Release, which would have made my life so much eaiser when taking these pics. I am also considering pulling the trigger on a new tripod. I have a nice metal loner, but its old and kinda hard to use...

Thanks for the compliments so far!

Zat, hope you don't mind, I'm putting a few of mine in here as I took a different route and went after deep colors by shortening the shutter a tad.

What you can see in one or two of these is our location was poor, not by choice, friends we met with selected the spot for ease of entry and exit due to their children. So I dealt with what I had. There's a water tower basically at the 7'oclock position, however, my short shutter netted great saturation and super dark blacks which hid the thing pretty damn well. Trade off is shorter light trails. I can live with it.

They are not cheap. This is the entry level Canon camera. Here is what I would recommend:

Canon Rebel XS, Utility Bag, 2GB SD Card, Tutorial DVD $469.

If you want a slightly better camera, and video capabilitys, go with the Canon T1i.

That is the only pic that I can see the water tower in. Good job at working around that.

I see the differences. Were you using a set shutter speed, or just not holding it open as long? I also notice that your shots seem to start AFTER the inital blast, thus eliminating the burst in the center, leaving you with only the light trails. Am I right in this assumption?

I was also in a bad spot. These shots were going off right above me, so I was not able to get the blast without them going beyond the frame of the camera. Next year I will be there early to get a better location.

The other bad thing is, on the coast, the crowds get quite roudy and its hard to find a good elevated location that the cops don't run people away from. I was on the balcony of a restroom/rest area on the beach. The crowd got to big and crazy, and the cops asked everyone to leave.

ouch, we don't generally see anything in the realm of rowdy. Totally family orientated out here in the suburbs.

You're right, I waited for the initial hit then triggered. I worked with my remote to do so, this let me see the show, and I triggered as I felt necessary.

My experience is that if the initial burst is included, it also washes out alot of color.
