TF Terminator Photoshoot (Rebel Xsi)

I bought a used DSLR from Triple A, so I decided to try it out with an early morning photo shoot. I started just before sun rise.

Id like to get some feedback from some of you pros on here (Emay, Zat, Triple A, Serb, etc.) I was playing around with the ISO and aperutre a lot trying to get a feel for how it effects the shot.

Keep in mind this is the first time I have used anything besides a point and shoot

Here it goes...a ton of pics

Overall, not bad at all. The only issue's I really see are slight tilting and exposure. Both are minor problems and can easily be fixed. For shots like that, I would have lined up the bottom of the building with the bottom of the view finder to make sure they're parallel.

For the most part, I only shoot at 100 ISO, especially when outside. When the sun starts setting I use a tripod if needed and a long exposure. Not sure if you were or not, but shoot in full manual and adjust shutter speed and aperture.

One thing you should look into is setting a custom white balance. (I can explain if you're interested)

Glad you're liking the camera

Thanks man. Yeah, I was shooting in full manual and playing with the shutter speed and aperture. I dont have a tripod, so I cant do any long exposures...I was getting a lot of camera shake when I tried.

I need to do some research on white balance...feel free to explain. I will take any help I can get!

Thanks again

I use a gray card which is 18% gray, but anything white or gray will work. What you do is shoot your card (or whatever) and check the histogram (press info in playback til you see it). You want it to be a mostly solid bar in the center. With gray, meter 2/3rd of a stop over and white should be either in the center or slightly under, I forget. Then go into your menu and find custom white balance submenu and pick that picture. Then set your white balance to custom.

More accurate color than the presets. Auto Daylight is set at 5500K, but can sometimes be warmer or cooler. And it's the same with all forms of light, artificial or natural.

6, 7 , 9 & 13 are my favorites.

I am far from a pro... more like a Prosumer, but thanks for the praise!

Like Triple A said, only issues are some exposure, tilting (which can be hard sometimes), and also I noticed some focus/framing... but very little.

For example, with some of the side pics the focus is kinda lost. You see the wheels and the same of the car, but the car exits the frame on both top and bottom. This makes your eyes move a great deal and it kinda takes away emphesis(sp) on the car.

This may be a personal preference as well.

Overall a very good first shoot. Better than what most people get on their first time out with a DSLR.

Thanks Zat...that means a lot coming from you as I ALWAYS love your shots. I see what your saying with the framing/focus.

I completely agree with your favorites too

Reps for the insight guys!

Work on finding a focal point as well and try to sharpen up your images. Some of then seem a tad on the soft side. My favorite it the shifter picture...

Other than shortening my shutter speed to minimize shake, what can I do to capture a sharper image...some of the shots came out really sharp and some did not(I took waaayyyy more shots than posted)...I just dont know what I did different.

That, and also you may be a shakey person. You might want to look into different postures in holding the camera. I usually hold my breath when I'm taking a shot. I'm a bit shakey with the camera if I don't have my 70-200mm mounted.

Its a combination of shutter speed and aperture (f stop). In its most basic definition, a high aperture will give you a sharper image while a low aperture will give you a softer image.

Here are some examples:

This shot was at f/1.8 on a 50mm Lens. Notice how blurred the background is, and the lines are soft. Her face is in focus and sharp, but the whole image has a soft feel to it.

These pics were shot at f/10 and f/13. Notice how much sharper the edges are. Now, the spider may appear to be soft, but thats due to the major close up and the edges becoming blurred. The wind was blowing, and the web was moving, causing focusing to be a PITA. Notice how you can see the hairs.

f/13, 1/100sec, 250mm, ISO 400

Kind of. I know what you're trying to say, but if I didn't understand I might think you meant if I wanted sharp pictures I need to shoot at f16. What you're referring to is bokeh and depth of field.

Ya, it may be worded wrong... but you get what I was getting at, Lol. I by no means claim to be a pro at this, so if something I say is incorrect, by all means tell me I am a flamming stupid idiot
