'40 Buick is out of the shop!

I just picked up my 1940 Buick Special from Mo's Speed Shop today! I've been waiting on this for 2 1/2 months and it was worth the wait.

It drives like a damn new car...but its like going back in time when you get in it. I cant stop smiling once I fire it up....get soooo many looks/thumbs up/kids pointing/etc in this thing.

Keep in mind, this is an ALL ORIGINAL, never been restored, surviver car. I am the third owner and there are roughly 50,000 miles on the car...allthough the odometer no longer works (the gauges will be the first thing to be restored, and Mo's has a guy that is GREAT for restoring instrument clusters....)

It is going to look nice in the garage beside the Cobra

EDIT:I took it out for another spin this morning. Driving that 3 on the tree is soooo much fun.

I cant wait to surprise my grandparents by picking them up for Thanksgiving this afternoon. I told them it would be in the shop for a couple more months

This car was my granpa's pride and joy for over 40 years and I know it killed him to watch it decline (as his health did) since he was unable to continue to give it the car it needed. This will be an emotional Thanksgiving when they see me pull up to their house in thier ole Buick!

Happy Thanksgiving to all you MM folks! I hope yall have a great one

That looks amazing, especially since it's not restored yet. There's just some sort of magic with those old pre-70's cars.

That is amazing for being in all original condition. 71 going on 72 years old and still like it was just bought. Now you need a group of guys, suits, and tommy guns. Ride around and own the city. lol

It is by no means perfect. The old single stage lacquer paint job has seen better days and the interior has a couple of tares and the gauges need to be restored (none of them work)...but all in all it is in amazing condition considering it has been around for 72 years and has never had any work done to it outside of standard maintanance.

It was a 1976 Electra Limited hardtop, with a 455 and a 4v quadrajet on it. Only 205 hp but 350 lb-ft of torque... at 2000 rpm. As a 4500 lb barge she sure didn't move off the line too quick, but if you had her rolling at 20+ mph and kicked it down... that low end torque would get her screaming pretty quick on the highway. It would hit 120 pretty easy.

I bought the car in 1984 when I was 15 for 1200 bucks from a friend of my mothers... I had taken a trip to Boston in it with her when I was 13 and had always wanted it. So it was only 9 years old when I finally bought it... but alas like a lot of iron from the 70s... it was a colossal rust bucket. I eventually put about a gallon of bondo and acres of sheet metal into those enormous rear quarters.... painted it- my first body job. My painting was flawless. My body work... not so much. Think gentle rolling waves when you looked down my quarter panels and doors. lol. But I loved it... eventually I got curious about how engines worked, and on a whim one Saturday afternoon tore the 455 apart. Never got it back together, and wound up scrapping the car. It's hard to describe to people just how awesome it felt to drive that car. And how awesome a quadrajet sounds when you smack those secondaries open.

It wasn't until the 383 in my '70 Cuda that I successfully rebuilt an engine.

.... ah the old 3 on the tree. I have not driven one of those since a mid 70s 1 ton Econoline Ford van... like 20 years or more ago.

Your Grandparents are going to be ecstatic man.

Thanks guys...

That is awesome Zip! There is nothing quite like driving an old orignal classic. The sounds, smell and feeling of the throttle, steering wheel and shifter is something that just cant be replicated...it really is an awesome thing to experience.

Sentimental time...

Its too bad the old man cant drive it...I sure would like to see him behind the wheel one last time...

One of my first memories was him "letting me drive" the car to my first car show as a kid...this, of course, consisted of me sitting in his lap while he actually drove the car.

Funny how an old car can evoke so many memories...bring so much joy and help create such a bond between an old man and a little boy.

I guess thats why WE ALL love our cars soooo much...and to think some folks just think they are a way to get from point a to point b

Very cool man! I've got my eye out for the right '55 Bel Air for a cruiser project.

There really is nothing like the old Olds/Buick motors. They are just absolute torque monsters. I love how even with a puny 350 my Cutlass can spin the tires like nobody's business, and pulls hard for an old car with an automatic.

Plus you could rev that baby and the whole car would torque to the side.

I agree with this. There is something just absolutely sublime about them in their original form. You're so directly connected to the road, and the vintage feel has such a novelty to it. Plus they sound (and smell) unlike anything else. The best is cruising in the summer with them, windows down, arm out the window while that huge motor just purrs. There is nothing like it.
