Camera Gurus: doink *edit* Maybe a Canon T3i? lul
Are these cameras worth the 300 bucks? I'm interested in getting one of these, but I don't want to waste my money.
HD HERO2 Motorsports Edition Thanks! |

They are the best camera for the money, for their purpose. Meaning, they are are sturdy, have a lot of mounting options and lots of protection from nature and shock. However, they aren't the best video camera for the money. If you are going to use it for it's intended purpose, they are awesome. But there are better choices for "plain old" digital video camera's.

Honestly, here's what I think when I hear "GoPro". I immediately think of it mounted on a helmet, bike, or car.
I would never associate it with a "walkaround" video camera.

I've had one mounted to my RC helicopter. If the chopper happens to take a small dip in the lake or a small crash, the camera is all good.
If you're looking for a general camera to take pictures/video while driving look at some of the flip cameras. They're basically designed for carrying around and taping random youtube stuff like you do.

their cameras are worth every penny and the new hd hero2 is actually an all around amazing camera for the price.
this entire video is completely shot with them, even the slomo parts. watch it in 1080 The HD HERO2: 2x as Powerful in Every Way - YouTube |

I would say its an action camera. Personnally u use smartycam but im looking into getting 1 for an exterior mount because im not risking the smartycam

Like everyone has said, if you want something to mount to the car while driving, or other types of action shooting, it's worth it. Although the GoPro HD, can be had for $200. The Hero2, has alot of high end features, like being able to control it over wifi, by an ipod.
What I'm looking into personally, is buying a decent point and shoot, and building my own suction cup mount for it. Then I just only use it on days when its nice out.

After reading many reviews, I've come to the conclusion this is not for me. It's too one dimensional. That one thing it does it does very, very well, especially for the price point... but the still pictures are just too subpar, and it's not exactly something I can pick up and quickly take shots with. The lack of a viewfinder/display screen sucks too. It's be a nice toy one day to take video of action shots... and it's great at that... but that's it.
...the search goes on.... maybe my first SLR? *goes SLR shopping* |

T3i is a fantastic entry level D-SLR Rick.
Maybe search for a T1i or T2i as they can be had for a few less pennies.

I don't mind the price point of the T3i. My budget on this *could be* around 1000-1200 bucks... so... I dunno. Just starting research on 'em. |

Assuming I go with a Canon; what is a good lens for me to start off with?

If you do want a nice walk around lens, look at the 24-105mm f/4 or even the 24-70mm f/2.8 glass. But be forewarned...those are Canon L-Glass and they aren't cheap. (But well worth the money)
