You can get a used Canon 18-135mm for around $250 if you look hard enough.

I love my 28-135mm. Came with my 50D, and it's a great walkaround lens (that won't break the bank)

How was it at 28? The 50D has the 1.6x crop factor as well correct? I don't want to lose to much wide angle. What would be the difference between a 18mm and a 28mm on a 1.6? If I understand it correctly, you multiply the number by 1.6 and that gives you the focal range... thus making them 28.8mm for 18mm and about 44mm for 28mm.

@ 28mm, it's perfectly fine. I've never had in issue where I couldn't get everything I wanted to in a shot. The IS is a nice feature if you have some camera shake too.

I went from an 18mm to a 28mm lens and I regretted it.

Based on what? How much was lost between the 18 and 28? Lefty, did you ever have lower than a 28mm lens?

I don't know the exact amount lost, but when I went to New York I had to take a few steps back to get all that I wanted in the shot with the 28 than I would have with my old 18.

And from what I've read in the past, the 18-135mm is sharper than the 28-135mm. They're both good lenses and I'm sure you'll like either one.

With my style of shooting I'd go with the wider lens, but that's just me

I am leaning to the 28. This lens will be used 90% of the time outside or when I go on trips. If it ends up being to narrow and not giving me the wide angle I want, I can always send it back and get the 18-85 I am looking at.

Just have to wait for my book trade in to make it to Amazon so I can buy it.

I've used my friend's 10-22mm at times, but I don't consider that a walkaround lens. That's a specialty lens IMO.

Do whatever ya think you'll be happy with.

I found a third party sale on FM for a 28-135 with hood and filter for $260 shipped. Gonna offer $250. I have a $70 amazon gift card on the way... if I wait, I save $30.

However, with Amazon, the price may go up between now and then. They are nortourios(sp) for that.

Waitting on a response if its a canon brand hood or a third part. If its a canon brand, then amazon would be $250 as well for the same thing with the gift card.

They're also under the impression that they'll take great pictures because they have big and expensive cameras.

Ended up going with the 17-85mm IS USM lens. Not a step up in image quality from the 15-55mm IS, but a step up in versatlity.
