Camera & Photoshop Gurus May I Have Your Opinions On

What would be a decent photoshop selection from this page, in the 200 dollar range, if there is one. Bear in mind as well that I will be a beginner at this.

Thanks!

My advice is spend more time composing the shot and less time editing. I mostly do architectural and night photography now, and I consider the shot a failure if I have to edit it afterwards. Usually the only thing I do is adjust the white balance of the RAW file in GIMP.

I have been taking my 35mm SLR along too, and you cant edit those

Well usually that's everyone's goal, but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way.

True that - 90% of anything you look at and go "good god that's fuggin awesome" is more than just a few tweaks. They are full on edits. The way of seeing the world though a lens has changed to seeing it through software. It's a train that is picking up pace, even amongst the photogs that were always totally against it.

I like a right from the camera shot too, but no matter how dead on you are, a clever edit to the same shot is the one that viewers will gravitate to every time.

I agree here. I always find it amazing when I see the original shot vs the final shot. With raw shots, good photographers seem to end up with good shots. But with some editing, the right photographers take that good shot and make it amazing (which makes the original good shot just look ok).

Yup and I kind of actually have a long range photography plan here. Back in the thread I had going here where I was deciding between camera or computer, Erin was kind of the one who made me realize the priorities of how I should do this. Not much point in buying a nice DSLR with no decent computer and software to work with. So, first I'm buying the computer, which is ordered, a nice shiny new monitor to view it all on, which landed today, now the software, and perhaps for my birthday in May I will force- I mean the wife will with great love and forethought buy me the DSLR I'd like.

Honestly I don't even use photoshop much for graphic design...I use Adobe Illustrator. Photoshop, to me, is for fine tweaking of things. Then LightRoom is my full on photo-editor.

Only time I use photoshop is for extensive projects. Lightroom is my main source for basic editing.
