If you're into macro shots, you'll need a macro lens.
Start learnin' that thing boy, and don't use the cheater modes

Nice! The 18-55 is OK at macro, but look into getting something like this if you don't want to spend too much on a dedicated macro lense. I'm thinking about getting one cause I've heard really good things about them.

Also.. you do need BOTH the lens and hood. They both attach at the same time. The filter blocks UV rays from hitting the lens, and acts as a protector for the glass. The hood keeps stray light from bouncing in the lens causing unwanted lens flar/glares.

^I'll keep that in mind, I'm looking for a good Macro lens, not just the cheapest, but it does need to be below 350 i would say.

Typo there, meant to say you need a Filter and Hood, not just one.

UV filter doesnt do anything for digital cameras (in some cases it makes the picture less sharp) but it does some protection for the lens. UV filters do a lot more for film cameras though

There are also polorizing filters that assist in a number of things on DSLRs. There are a ton of advantages to filters in DSLRs. If UV Filters/Filters in general were not that useful for DSLRs, then the market for them would not be so vast and you would not see almost everyone using them. Granted... UV Filters and the Polorizing filters, ect could be two different things. Correct me if I am mixing the two.

UV filters and Polarizing filters are different things. Maverick is correct, UV rays do not effect digital sensors so other than providing protection for lens elements, they're useless on digital cameras. Polarizing filters reduce reflections and increase saturation, but also may reduce contrast.
Any type of filter (including expensive ones) will reduce image sharpness, but that can always be brought back up with post processing. |

Yeah, UV doesn't do anything, but I leave them on my lenses just to protect them a bit more. Also OP that 35MM isn't really a macro lense.
This is one of their best ones. AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED from Nikon
Here are a couplededicated macro lenses that Nikon makes: This would be good for your budget although you would have to get very close to your subject.

To get a little more technical... UV filters block UV. Polarizers block all light that vibrates in a specific direction; they're for reducing glare off of reflective surfaces (think of polarized sunglasses and how the cut glare off of water/snow). The thing about polarizers is that they're directional, so if you have a lens that focuses by rotating the barrel, you have to focus, THEN adjust the polarizer for the shot. To the best of my knowledge, that's a big part of why high-end lenses don't rotate the barrel on focus or adjusting focal length.
