Great pics White! You have beautifull kids too. Its great to have good looking kids because even when you take crappy shots, they still turn out well!

White, congrats on getting the flash, is it a freebie, a borrow, or a pay - lol.

Remember when we were talking about the wedding practice, your first shot of the boy is an example of what I was talking about with the center of the shot being very "hot" on the persons face. That won't be very appealing on wedding pics. The second shot has less hot, but it's at her hair so that could have pulled some of the light..

To remedy that, either use the clear diffuser on the end of the 430, or get an omni bounce for like 7 bucks, I highly recommend it. It will take that hot spot completely away and diffuse the light across the subject. Human skin becomes shiney under bright light and reflects back, the omni shuts that down.

Another thing is, it appears you had the flash sort of straight ahead right at him. Tilt it up at the ceiling at a 45 degree angle, and take those pictures at a distance where the light has a chance to bounce off the ceiling downward on the subject. You'll learn very quickly that if you stand further away, but zoom in you can get the same shot you had with better fill light.

Hope all that helps, I learned it all the hard way and it took a lot of practice. Here's one of my recent results with 2 580ex's off camera on a wireless trigger. Focus on the skin tone and the lack of shine.. That's the key.

nice, someone is addicted..

Since your doing dark work, you can reduce the starring around lights by using a faster f-stop. Thats a tip I wish I knew earlier in the hobby. Sometimes they are cool, other times they annoy, all depends on your mood and what you want in the composition of the picture..

Wait till you catch your first accidental shooting star (happens more often than you think with a 30 second exposure, your gonna chit yourself..

You need another rock chip in the windshield, you can still see out of it with the minimal amount of lines passing across the thing. Maybe line up with a gravel truck and try to get some vertical cracks.. LOL

White, Looking at the exif data imbedded in your train pic, I see it was shot at F/13, iso 125, and 1/60th shutter. The bright sun took away from the vibrance because it was so harsh.

When it's nice and sunny like that, try and keep your F stop at 16 until you get a solid feel for the ramifications of your adjustments. The train is slightly blurry, because you picked a focal point that was not the train, but had an F13 aperature, and a 1/60th shutter, by the time you snapped the picture after getting focus down, the train had moved. Hence train not tack sharp. The bigger thing to watch for is taking pictures of moving objects means a slow shutter (anything under 100) will get you blur unless your so still people think your a statue at times. Trains tend to rock side to side slightly as well, which makes it doubly hard.

I would shoot that shot first at a shutter speed of 125th, F16, iso 200. If you want the train sharp at a small aperature, then you'll have to set AI servo on, and the left most auto focus point on the camera. This gets the camera to reset focus quickly on moving objects, additional to the half shutter release. It's meant for burst shooting, but would help a bunch in this scenerio.

For a different feel, with no focus on the train whatsoever and a super vibrant sky, I would go to F8, manual focus on the closest railroad tie, or set the lower auto focus point on the closest tie, at iso 200 and 1/60th to 1/80th (cause the railroad tie isn't moving). This would get a really blue sky, the train would be barely viewable and the railroad ties would be tack sharp up to about 20 feet out and then fade away.
