I need some opinions on some pics I took.

I figured I'd post some pics that I took. I know some of you are big into photography and atleast have some good skills. I was basically looking for some constructive criticism, I feel like they are all good but I know their might be some things that I could do to make them better. The were all taken with a 'point & shoot' camera (either my old Kodak or my current Canon). I did some minor adjustments with Paintshop Pro (I don't have photoshop and probably couldn't figure it out if I did). So let me know what you like and what could use some work.

1-3 are New Orleans

4 was a flower in my backyard

5 & 6 are the hood of my dads car

7 side view of his car

8 & 9 are pics from Alabama (when we evacuated for the hurricane)

9 & 10 are from Florida

I know some of the pics you can't see the blue sky, it was probably cloudy then. Some pics may look choppy because they are not hi-res.

Thanks,
Mike

I'll toss in come criticism as you asked for it. Always keep in mind that when you take pictures, the artistic point of view and reason for taking that shot is yours, not anyone elses. So what I say isn't necessarily right because you might have had a reason for doing any of the things you did because you are after all, the artist.

One key rule, always try to take your shots using the rule of thirds. Here's what this means - your sunset shots have the sun directly in the middle of the shot. If you take that shot thinking about breaking the picture into 3 sections, it automatically becomes more appealing to everyone's eyes by human nature. It makes the viewer not focus dead center which creates a warmer feel and greater ability to climb in that picture. (you did this in the fire hydrant shot very well). All that said, sometimes the shot is just better with everything center based on surroundings. In the case of your sunsets, I think with the building in the one could have been set as a thirds shot and come off stellar. The beach one with the sun pushed to the left, then open water and the beach coast line going off into the distance on the right would have been killer with those colors you caught. (again my personal opinion)

Example sunset:

Your woods pictures have an over exposed feeling in the centers where the sky came through. This is because your camera metered for the shot on the darker colored leaves and wooded surrounding, any brighter lit areas automatically over expose. Trick is to meter the sky by half presing the shutter while pointing there, then reset what you actually want in the photograph and full press the shutter. The other answer is to take 2 shots and merge them together, one metered on the sky, and one on the wooded area.

Lastly, I have a pet peave about crooked buildings unless a fisheye or wideangle lens are in use purposely distorting a shot for an artistic view. I know the tendency is to add a perspective onto a shot instead of the straight up and down routine shot, but a crooked building makes the viewer tilt when viewing, again by nature. The close up one with just the light and the building shutter played out well, the other tilted shots from distance I would recompose more straight.

All the shots are extremely good. Especially for walk around point and shooting.

Damn dude you're good! They look professional. I like the frog one and the sun reflecting off the beach.

The frog one I can see being put on the back of like a camera, printer, or printer paper box to show the clarity. You know what I mean? lol

wow that was exactly what I was looking for, great advice and I'll put it to some use. I was actually hoping that you'd chime in. I've seen your pics before and they are amazing. Thanks again, and thanks to everyone else.
