Red Pony's Hi-Comp 3.9 full roller build
So what started out as a blown head gasket and bad rings, has now turned into a full on engine/trans build.
I started out with having heads, intake, and a mild cam as the only major things I've done to it. By the time I am done, it will be bored .020" over with forged 10.5:1 pistons, a 224/230 .550 cam, a little touch up and the head/intake porting, and have the heads milled even more for a total of .015" miller. I will also have full roller rockers on it. I'll be using the original block bored over and head studs in it. plus all new gaskets and bearing of course. And I will paint the engine and trans, and clean the underhood well. The trans is also shitting the bed on me, so I figure I'll fix/upgrade it while I have it out. The plans for the trans (gigady) is to fix what is broken (duh) and to put some billet keys in it while it is apart. It will give it more than enough strength to handle what I plan on making.

I've been working on my car on weekends and after work. I work at a dealership so my tools are right there and I have a lift and cherry picker and what not and access to service info.
I got everything out and the old engine done to bare block in a matter of about 3 hours. That was last saturday. Today I put the pistons in and put the timing cover, water pump, and oil pan on. All I have left on the engine is to put the heads and intake one, and put the front and rear crank seals in.

I might be putting chrome headers on it (the current ones are really beat up) and I might get an aluminum DS.

I might. I have pacesetter long tubes, but I got pissed when I was putting them in and beat the shit out of them thinking it would make them fit. :/

Got the engine built. Still need to paint it, but I will run if I want it to. Forgot to get a pic though. Tore the tranny down. All the bearings and gears are in good shape so it will not take much to get it going again. I'm going to get a basic kit. I don't know if I should get the billet keys though. The stock ones were fine.

Engine is done. I painted it today. Now I need to paint valve covers, accessories, and trans (when it's done) black.

looks like a nice build. Its nice to see one coming together quickly. I get anxious sometimes waiting for updates on other builds
![]() What are you expecting performance wise out of it? |

Well the engine is done. I might put ford emblems on the valve covers and clear over them. Tranny though.. I need 2 gears, 1 blocker, and a basic rebuild kit.

If not tomorrow, then Monday I'll be ordering T5 basic rebuild kit, 5th drive gear, 5th driven gear, and 5th syncro assy. Then work at getting the trans back together and everything back in the car. All I like as far as parts is a new set of headers, but I might use the long tubes I have now just until I get the new longtubes.
