If I'm gonna start drag racing what things do I need to add first?

Depends how serious you are...

Suspension
Drivetrain
Sticky Tires
Motor Work

What you want to run?

If you are going to be serious. Try to find an 8.8 rearend with 373/390/410 gears installed already for cheap
Then if your auto get a shift kit and handheld

I had a goal of hitting 12s..
It pays off to have a goal. Then take note of everything you will need to accomplish it

^This is the truth. I had the goal of breaking in the 12s with the Focus and I made that happen this past year. It's a 12.9 but I'll take it. My next goal is a 12.6 and I have the mod list I should need to get there while still on the stock block. Just set a goal and strive for it.

My advice would be to go out to a couple test and tune nights and spectate at first. It could help get a feel for how things work at the track.

I have done some drag racing in mine. It's fun, but I always miss Auto X and road course racing. I really want to get back in to it. I might try finding a local SCCA chapter and start that. Curves are much more fun, and I like things to last a little longer then 12 seconds. :

^The turns are fun but I have the itch to go fast. In the times I've autocrossed, I never got out of 2nd gear or above 50mph. That bored me to death. I like to see that 100mph+ trap speed, even if it only last 12 seconds. Why measure how long the race lasts rather than measuring how much of an adrenaline rush the race gives you?

I did fairly well at autocross. The car's suspension is setup for it and I've got a little bit of seat time, but in the end, I like racing side by side with someone in a race to the finish rather than against the clock.

You are right, in autox you barely get over 50 mph. However, the g's you feel are a TON of fun IMO. Plus in road racing you get MUCH higher speeds. Don't get me wrong, I love drag racing, but pushing a car to the edge of your driving ability through a slalom or chicane is just more fun to me.

It is a blast, don't get me wrong. Just not for me. Road racing... I've never tried it and can't really justify the $$$ to just get on the track in the first place and even then you can't open it up at first and you're with an instructor. The total cost I spent at drag strips last year, including events, still came out less than 1 evening at summit point raceway for 2 hours of track time.

That being said, if I actually got out there and did it once, I'd probably be hooked. That's exactly why I won't do it though cause I know I'd end up spending alot more money on the car then.

I'm going to the track for my first time at the end of april, and like you said I'll definitely scope things out before I take my first run, is there anything thats required? Do i need a helmet with a basically stock car? and stock seatbelt+seat?

Also what do you all recommend I do to my car to improve handling?

Define track. I'm not sure what kind of racin your talking about. Drag racing only requires a helmet if you go 13.99 or faster. Autox depends on your local division rules. The division I'm in requires a helmet no matter what class you are in.

Depends on who your instructor is
I have never held anyone back, as long as they are in control of the car and I am comfortable with them. After all... I am trusting them with my life!

And, if all is good, then move him up to the next class, so he can go faster with faster cars and better drivers.

Open Track is SOO much fun!

If anyone is in the S. Florida area, May 28, we will be at Sebring for SVTOA.
Its going to be a HUGE event.

I would be happy to take anyone out for some laps.

I've tried all three= drag, autoX, and road racing. Neither drag nor autoX comes close to open track events. It's like putting both drag and autoX in one when road racing cause you have the high speed's of drag and the turns of autocross X10. I've never broken 100 mph in drag racing but I can reach speeds of 140 at Daytona in the front straight after the big 3-4 banking and I'm slow. At autoX you nearly come close to what, 60mph in a straight? I do 60mph in a turn at any given track and once again, I'm slow compared to some of the monsters I run with. The $200+ price to run an event is very cheap if you think about what's involved. Most events have 3 or 4 sessions at 30 minutes each. That's more track time in one day that you'll ever do in drag racing if you go every weekend for the rest of your life. Your comparing orange's to apple's when you decide not to try an open track day because of the price. It's two totally different animals. And might I add It's made me a much better driver on and off track. I know the limits of my car and what it can and can't do.

I've tried my Stang auto crossing and drag racing. Its obviously a lot stronger at drag racing, but auto x is way fun. My little Cavalier is way faster around the cones though, and its just as fun. I plan to keep drag racing the Stang and auto crossing the Cavvy.
