wow u askin for a lot.... lol
i dont know it all ( i come from a mopar family) so someone else can fill in the blanks.

the classic mustangs are bad ass just simply for the fact that you will get looked at ( i know i had a 66' coupe)

the 70's era ones are actually really cool ( in my opinion) cause no one else likes them

the 80's mustang are probally the best cars used in any forms of racing....
because of thier size/weight and compatability to just about any engine and tranny combo

the 90's ... (well the modulare ones i mean) make a pretty good street machine,(i currently own a 2001 mustang GT) they are fairly agile and make decent hp. numbers (considering there size)

then there is the new ones 05+ ( not a fan of the body style) which have the variable valve timing (i think thats what its called)
3 valve per cylinder, and i just has the coolness factor of a new car model

(one thing i dont like about the new one is the fly by wire set up for the throttle body, dont know why i just dont)

but there u go some very general information about the mustang

Ford wanted a sports car that was fairly inexpensive to produce and would appeal to all shapes and sizes, men, women, young, and old. Hence the Mustang. This started the 'Pony car' craze and led to other small two door cars that had a base v-6 and then multiple (usually smaller displacement) v-8s like the Camaro, Firebird, Challenger, etc. But none of these had the popularity and success of the Mustang, and that popularity continues to grow today in both mainstream and pop culture. It seems just about every commercial on TV has a S197 Mustang in it!

As you probably know by now, Mustangs come in all shapes and sizes, but for me (and I think a few people will agree with me) the ultimate is the '03-'04 SVT Mustang Cobra. Factory forged interals! Factory supercharger! Typically 360+ RWP and mid 12 second capable...BONE STOCK! Did I mention that they have factory forged internals and there are guys that are running 9's without even cracking a valve cover bolt!?!?!

Ford created a class of car with the mustang, the pony car. Its not really a sports car wasnt really a muscle car for those days. gm answered with the camaro and trams am, dodge made a week attempt to answer with the challenger, that is not to knock the challenger its a cool car but didnt really stand a chance. Ford has dominated this class of car ever since.

The mustang is true to henry ford's original vision. That is "to build a reliable car that everybody can afford." That is what I love about the stang.

The mustang is legendary on the race tracks contrary to some popular opinion on this site. it is and always has been a great road course platform. The shelbys and 302 boss's dominated trams am racing in the 60s and early 70's and the 05 mustang won the grand am cup. the fr500 is still manhandling porshes and beamers this year in that circuit.

The mustang was never really that famous for drag racing as it wasnt original conceived as a muscle car anyway. That is not to say that their werent some stangs with big engines in them, the 427, 428, and 429 cobra jet. Tid bit of info for you the 427 cobra engine was actually a 426 cubic inch engine. Ford called it 427 becuase dodge already had the 426 hemi stamped on the side of cars and ford didnt want to be the same.

The mustang has vanquished all the competition in its class, the challenger and trans am, the gto "twice," and finally buried the camaro.

To this day ford still designs the stang with the goal of making it a very affordable car with a lot of perfomance as the mission. Ford also spends a ton of money with every engine redesign making sure that whatever engine they drop in a mustang it stills sounds like a mustang

there have been more mustangs sold than any other car in the world making it by defintion the most popular car in the world.

It is an american icon.

A living legend.

Odly enough the plain mustangs are as popular as any. Take the 68 fastback gt that was in bullitt. This car was bone stock, green, with factory rims. everyone loves it. the only mod or dress up on this car was it said bullitt where it should say gt. its is the subtleness of the mustangs the lines, the plain but exciting look of the car that people can help but love. it is in fact american in everyway. no a lot of flash or bling and still just a work of art.

another tid bit of info for that movie bullitt is that they used two stangs in that movie and one of them was not a gt. they droped the 390 engine in it. but if you watch the movie on some shots the car has duel exhaust but does not have the cut outs for the exhuast. the one without the cut outs for the exhaust is not a real gt.

Its funny the stock stangs bring as much attention as the modded ones. most of the time more.
