Intentionally causing your car to lose traction on a paved track is called "fooling around" or "being stupid", we didn't need a new name for it.

And this is now a "sport" or legit form of "racing"?

What next, "wreckin'", where you wreck your car into the wall and admire your bent sheet metal?

This is no different than wearing your pants falling half off your ass and calling it a "style". It's idiotic, plain and simple.

Actually it's really fun if u can do it right...not the best thing for a mustang w/ stock suspension, but i used to turn my truck sideways cause it had a full sport suspension. it's almost as fun as racing over 110...

No, it's not racing, and if you talk to pro drifters, they'll say the same thing. Drifting is about style first, and speed is only part of style. It's about car control.

If you want to be honest about it, drifting is the figure skating of the automotive world. It takes a lot of time, effort, and talent, but it doesn't cause you to get across the rink any faster. But that doesn't mean it's not respectable in its own right.

That being said, there's a LOT of stupid, punk-ass, douchebag, wanna-be drifters out there. It's just like drag racing. For every upstanding member of the autosports community that takes their car to the track, there's 100 idiots out there racing on the street.

One thing I should clarify, is that drifting is maintaining control of your car. Yes, you initiate by intentionally losing traction, but (if you're doing it right) you're still in total control of your vehicle.

But, no, it's not racing.

^lmao!!!!!

im kinda surprised to hear someone that looks at drifting that way. you'd probably have a different opinion about it if you rode a few laps around a track with a pro drifter.

and like someone said before in the thread, competition drifting isnt racing. its not about who can go around the course the quickest. IMO its about who can do it with the best style, control, angle, etc.

So basically drifting is all about style and not substance? All show and no go? All hat and no cattle? No wonder it seems idiotic to me - it is. Sorry, I just don't get. But then I wear my hat straight and my pants cover my ass, so maybe I don't get a lot of things.

Yes its about style, but no go? the v8s cars make 800 hp and they drift at 70+ mph thats pretty go. Im a drifting fan, the control needed to drive like that is respectable. I wouldnt call it racing though. Its drifting and its a motorsport, that. Even Nascar, which I hate, the slide the cars a bit, losse is fast. Drifting is more for the fans and entertainment value. Who doesnt like a burnout and screamin v8s?

Exactly, they just make a livin doin what everyone on here loves to do wit theirs cars. Dirt track racing has been around for years and its drifting in a circle and no one says that aint racing. It takes alot more skill to change direction and have to hit certain points. Ive personally seen guys at events rubbing their bumpers on the wall, one guy took a banner off and didnt loose any speed. oh and they were suppose to be as close to the wall as possible.

i think the biggest beef against drifting is the type of ppl who seem to like it (not here but in general), stupid kids in thier ricers who think they are bad ass cuz they have NOS and VTEC

Urm, drifters hate Hondas as much as most domestic guys do, because Hondas are fwd, and thus utterly useless for getting sideways (that is, other than the S2k). "NOS" is pretty useless too, as they consider overpowering the tires to be the least skillful way to initiate drift.

There's gonna be idiots that like everything, just because idiots like something, doesn't mean you shouldn't.

Yeah, that's my thing too, that, and pre-S197 Mustangs have too much axle float to be controllable unless you get a panhard or a watts.

At least, that's my excuse.... (my friend runs drift events and owes me money, so I have to keep making new excuses why I won't run in 'em)
