Panama Canal
I was going to post this in the clubhouse but I think it belongs here since it has such a great impact on the southeast.
I didnt know this but the Panama canal is being expanded. It will be completed in a few years and will be able to let much larger ocean freighters through the locks. This will give certain container ships the ability to come through the canal rather than go all the way around south america. Going all the way around actually keeps some freighters from coming here because it is too inefficient to travel that far. what happens is they find other modes of getting the freight to wherever. Some say that the widening will increase the amount of ships to the southeast by 600%.
This is such good news for us. Especially for Tampa. Tampa has a deep water port with more room than any to expand. When they open this expansion up, its going to bring jobs and money to the southeast and its port cities. This may seem like a lame subject but this will have some sort of impact directly or indirectly on all of us down here.... in a good way.
