no

overdrive is an extra gear used to lower ur rpms for highway speed. It's a real bitch trying to go uphill in overdrive at 60mph.

no. he ^ was right. turn it on to get your rpm's down and better you mileage. don't use it for racing.

turning it off will hold it in gear longer. If your ganna race it can be used to your advantage, but turn it on after 60 or else it just drags your car down.

well i have found some other posts sortta like this, and i have gotten that: taking o/d off will keep me in higher rpm's, so i will have more power(faster accereration), but i shouldnt go over 60 without it on cause its unnessiary abobe 60. Am i right?

Think about it this way:
3rd gear in your transmission is 1:1
4th gear in a 5-speed is 1:1

If you were racing would you shift into 5th gear because you were doing over 60?

Turn the overdrive back on when you would shift into 5th in manual transmission car.

It doesn't matter. The car doesn't go in to overdrive until you hit around 35 or 40 mph and are applying little or no throttle. When you're racing, your foot is to the floor, and you're not going to see overdrive in 1/4 mile anyway. the transmission will automatically hold each gear until it's preset shift points when your foot is on the floor.

The od issue is in your head. Go ask your Ford dealer if you don't believe me. Unless they have put some new technology that I am unaware of in that transmission, in which case I will say, "Hmm, sorry, I was wrong about that."

But you have a 5 speed automatic transmission. By the time you hit the end of 4th gear you will almost be bouncing off of the top speed governer in your V6.

Let me put it to you this way. Say you are cruising around at 80 mph on the highway. A dude comes up beside you and wants to go. You floor it. What happens? The transmission automatically downshifts in to 4th gear, thus making od a non-issue.

So with that thought in your head, it's no different than racing from a dig. You mat the pedal. the transmission will wind out each gear to approximately 6000 rpm, and then automatically shift to the next gear. It will never see od with your foot to the floor until a very high speed.

The only way it will shift at a different point than that, is if you take your foot off the floor a bit, or use the shifter itself to hold first longer (which is pointless in a bone stock car- no more power over your factory redline), or modify the car.

No problem man. My pleasure.

Another way to look it is to think about the gears on, say, an 18 speed mountain bike. Do the larger, high speed gears have anything to do with the smaller gears you use to go up a hill or get rolling? Nope. It's just another gear to be used at a different speed.

The best use of the O/D off button is when you're on hills, and the transmission keeps shifting between 4th and 5th. (Or "playing gear hunter" I've heard it called).
