internal or external wastegate for Holset HX35

ill start off by letting you know that this is my first turbo car and I don't know a lot about them but i know some.

I bought a holset hx35 about a year ago in hopes to use it on a motot I had. Never got around to building the motor so its been sitting in the garage.

Well I got my turbo 92 coupe in on friday and its already no enough for me. Current mods at end of post. I want to put my holset HX35 on it. The problem is that it has a cracked exhaust housing right through the wastegate.

So my question is should I just have my buddy weld the crack and permanently close the internal waste gate. Then run an external wastegate. My other option is to get a used exhaust housing from the local junk yard for $100. I found the hx35 exhaust plates on ebay to make my own 3" down pipe.

current mods
1) Turbonetics 60mm custom clipped turbo, stage III
2) race port and polished head by "Dutch", Lower intake hogged
3) 95 cobra master cylinder
4) spec 2 clutch
5) FMIC and custom tig welded piping
6) custom dual 5.0 exhaust, catless
7) 8.8 rearend, 4 wheel disc brakes 3:55 gears(getting changed for a stock 5.0 8.8 so i can use my 18x10.5 true forged wheels)
8) rear seat delete
9) new black carpet/headliner...black interior
10) autometer water, oil, boost guages in a-pillar pod
11) Stainless thick wall header
12) Ranger roller cam and adjustable cam gear
13) Arp head studs
14) Steeda Tri-Ax shifter
15) Big Vam and 35.5 injectors

thanks guys

Nice setup! I would weld the exhaust housing and run an external waste gate.

BTW with those mods it should be faster than your GT.

true but my turbo wasn't even starting to spool when we raced. I made him start from a roll in second gear at 4k. I was at 2k rpm in 2nd. i couldn't hear the turbo start to spool until 3k prm.

the company that is rebuilding my turbo reccomended a turbosmart 38mm wastegate.

I have heard that the stock wastegate on the holset is only good to about 7psi. with a 2.3 being so small and running 30psi of boost that im wasting a LOT of exhaust energy if the wastegate opens at 7psi.

^ I agree the turbosmart wastegate line is one of the best I have ever used.
