SVO

So i have a chance to pick up a 85 SVO for 600 bucks. I havnt seen it but my dad did, its at one of his friends junkyards, its a complete car, but my dad said it looked like it could use some work, he said it wasnt bashed up or anything, my question is, if the body is in good shape, or if i just get the motor and toss it into a 4cyl fox shell, how easy is it to build more power? if you were to upgrade the fuel system and put a bigger turbo on it how would the 2.3 handle it? If someone could chime in and let me know how easily achieveable 300 hp is, that would be great, thanks guys.

Assuming the motor is good 300hp is easily achievable with a few mods. The 86 SVO's produced 210hp at the flywheel so ideally 190 or so lost in the drivetrain. First thing to do is upgrade the fuel pump. Obviously don't want to starve the car. Secondly crank up the boost, IIRC stock the manual cars ran about 12psi, autos could only push 10psi. Don't want to blow the auto tranny obviously. After that its just upgrade and go, Hog out the intakes, upgrade the intercoolrer, open everything up for air flow. Obviously more airflow = more power is forced induction. I haven't had my 88 SVO conversion dyno'd but we're guesstimating 300 or so hp on it. Its a stock motor, gutted upper intake, 65mm tb, t3 turbo running 20psi, large npr front mount, large vam, upgraded fuel pump. Other than that its pretty stock.

Just an update for ya NJ i finally got my turd dyno'd. With a really bad clutch slip and very lean mixture it produced 228hp 253 torque. Clutch slipped in the power band big time so I could've seen 250 easily. Along with the clutch slip I had a 10.3 afr through the entire power band. So i'm probably sitting really close to 300rwhp atm. I'll be getting the clutch fixed in a few weeks and fatten up the mixture and dyno it again.

I agree you can get 150-200 for the tail lights alone, that's just the start.

I got my 85 for $750 all it needed was a fan motor. They are real fun cars and mine with the T3/4 turbo can easily keep up with my 02 GT. SVO Club of America's forums have a lot of info too.

Not to burst your bubble but...
1st SVO's didnt come in an automatic.
2nd SVO's ran 15 psi stock with over boost set at 17.
