C6 Transmission Question

I have a 1973 351C with a C6 transmission. I just did some work on the engine and then took it out for a drive today. When I put the tranny in Drive, it feels like it is slipping. It barely made it to 30MPH. I did not race the engine, but it was slipping pretty bad. However, when I put it in 1st or 2nd gear, the vehicle runs fine.

When I was working on the engine, I did remove the radiator and I spilled about a quart of transmision fluid, but I topped up the transmission. I am going to take the thing to a transmission shop but I was wondering if anyone has heard of a problem like this. I expect that I will be told that the transmission needs a rebuild, as I don't have a lot of faith in transmission shops. A second question, I was looking at buying a new C6 that is modified for 300 HP. The price seems pretty reasonable ($600), which I'm expecting will be cheaper than rebuilding the transmission.

where are you located? did the trans shift fine before you worked on the engine? Is it possible that you don't have the vacuum hose to the modulator hooked up or that the kickdown linkage is off or misadjusted? Might be worth a check before you take it somewhere. Also, a C6 rated at 300hp is probably just a stock rebuild.

You hit it on the head. I replaced all the hoses and forgot the trans vacume line. Runs like a top now!
