2.3t T-bird problems

I know it isn't an SVO but I figured this would be the place to post this since it's the same engine, mods feel free to move it if it should go elsewhere.

So my brother just bought a really sexy '87 Turbo Coupe. It runs strong up until about 3000, then it starts to break up and surge. We did a tune up on it because it had been sitting a little while. We changed Cap/rotor/plugs/wires/coil/oil. It seems to run a little smoother but still breaks up around 3k. It also reads 32* of timing. A friend of mine suggested replacing the TFI module, that it may be causing the computer to advance the timing. What do y'all think?

Your timing is WAYYYY TO HIGH!

bump it down to about 15*

also since it has the IHI RBH25 turbo it's only good to 3000rpms or so.

32 degrees? spout in or out? Spout out, drop to 15ish area as turbo said, spout in at what rpm range? The spout allows the computer to control timing, but if the spout is out go down before you kill the bird please.

spout in or out?
We are both new to the 2.3t, so please define spout... Also, according to the people he got it from it has an upgraded turbo, so I'm not sure exactly what it is and I haven't bothered to look.

yes waaaay too much timing.....i've owned two turbo coupes 87 and 88. as far as breaking up....does it lose boost when it starts to mess up or does the boost gauge should stay pegged?? because at full throttle the turbo should be at full boost by about 2800 if it has the stock IHI turbo., if its an upgraded turbo do you know what kind?? If not just take the IC off and look underneath and read what kind it is. If its upgraded it probably just has the Garrett T3 from the earlier model TC's. check that and let me know what ya find. and let me know about whether its holding boost or not.

Ok took a look at it this weekend. Car does not have an IHI, previous owner put a t3 on it, it looked like. Pulled the codes and it appears to be spitting out the ECT, ACT, and VANE meter codes. As for timing it was spot on. When he said 32* that was with the ecu controlling it. When the car starts up the rpms jump around so that is probably why they saw 32*. Car is in pretty much excellent condition inside and out. Just has some motor issues. Possible wiring issues also. Previous owner removed the adjustable air ride suspension system, and did a lot of custom wiring. Possibly the reason for the break ups. Tried to pull the volts off the vane meter at the plug and couldn't get anything, but the volt meter did has a bad connector to the box. More details to come.
