oil in coolant

my friend has a 96 v6 and we think he might have blown a head gasket but arnt possitive. There was clearley a blown hose but the thing we are confused about it there is oil in the coolant resivoir. the hose that blew was a coolant hose not oil. I have heard it could be any of the following, head gasket, intake gasket, or timing cover seal, does anybody have an idea? We put a new hose on it and there doesnt seem to be any major leaks but the oil in the coolant makes me think something had to break internally. any input would be appriciated and if i was wrong about anything please correct me. thanks

Oil in the coolant is a bad sign. Yes it could be a head gasket, lower intake manifold gasket, or front cover gasket. Did it overheat when the hose blew? If so it's likely a head gasket.

there is oil in the coolant but no coolant in the oil. and we drained the coolant and there was maybe a 1/4 of a quart of oil if that. unfortunatly i dont think we will know until we tear it down. and yes it did over heat when the hose blew. we are starting to lean tward the heads but arnt sure yet.

I'm not sure if 96 had the multilayer steel (MLS) head gaskets. The gaskets that were used in the earlier V6 engine had problems. Since it overheated it is almost certainly a head gasket. While the heads are out have them checked for cracks and surfaced. Also check the mating block gasket surface for straightness. The MLS gaskets require a very smooth surface to seal. The machinist should know about that.

It would be a good idea to also replace the timing cover gasket as well.
