instal cost question for LT's
I have a quick question. I have the MAC LT's and Im going to a friends house monday for instal. He said he'd take the manifold off and put the headers on and then well drive it to the muffler shop and let the muffler guys finish it. Does this make sense? I told him I'd give him a $100 to do it but now I'm wondering if it would be cheaper just to have the muffler shop do the whole thing. Am I wrong? Is it cheaper to install the headers ouselves and have the muffler shop finish it off or just have the muffler shop do the whole thing? I'd call the shop myself but I want to see what you guys think first.
Again, stating I'd give him $100. what do you think? |

Ehh, he probably will. I offered the money and am taking it but he prolly wont take it anyway. I just called a muffler shop and he said they could do the whole thing for about 3.1 hours of labor or about $300. thats with me bringing all the goodies (gaskets and extenders). He said if he'd had to fab up an h pipe or whatever, that would be a few bucks more. Does $300 sound reasonable?
I should see if AC is still around. He lives up the road and maybe he needs a few bucks. |

if they stick to their words and actually do it for 300 no gimmicks then save your friend the trouble and take it in, also, see what the difference is with them just doing the H pipe

Damn j, too bad your not close to me, id help you put em on for a case of MGD.
100 bucks isnt too bad, but its def. something you two could probly just knock out in an afternoon. Call the muffler shop and see if they can give you an estimate. If its close to 100, just have them do it. Then you wont even have to get your hands dirty. |

300 before mufflers is way way way to much install your self and have them run the pipe itll be in 150 if they have to run pipe less if they are just connecting your headers to the exhaust you already have. and for an h-pipe just have them weld in a crossover bar

New problem!
Went to the guys house to get em hooked up. Just got back. LT's still in the trunk! I must have missed this somewhere. Apparently, I need new cats too. The LT's look too long and they will run half way into the cats on each side. Since Im not going to delete the cats due to the need for the backpressure, this means I need to buy 2 cats that are shorter in order to give me the room to fit the LT's on. I did not know this. Is there any way around it? You guys that have put LT's on, is this common? My cats are long and so far forward that it will not give me enough room for the header on each side. WTF! It sucks. Any suggestions PLEASE! |

When you buy lt's you need a new h pipe. Buy an onroad h pipe or just buy a couple high flows from summit and have them welded in.

Well, since your lt's go so far back under the vehicle, you obviously have to shorten the h pipe (you cant shorten a catback) to make up for the room the lt's have taken. So thats why they make different h pipes for lt's, equal length headers and shorties. Since you have lt's, the h pipe for you will be alot shorter because the gap between your catback and headers is now smaller. So, if i am hearing you right, you either need to buy an on-road h pipe for lt's, or have a muffler shop weld you up a set.

Are you asking "can i use my stock catted Y along with my new lts?"
hey j, go here http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...ead-clips.html Look at the picture in the 1st post. See how your exhaust goes wayyy up into the actual engine compartment because of how short the stock manifolds were? basically, when you buy lts you are forced to make your car a "true dual" setup, mimicking the gt setup. |

Pic I just took. I drew a line where the LT ends up (same on both sides).
so let me get this right. Excuse my ignorance here. I need to change the part of my exhaust AFTER the cats and move the cats backwards. This will free up the room for the LTs?

Not exactly. Your lts bolt onto your engine. They replace the manifolds. Next in line is your part with the cats. This part is where you drew the line. You drew the line on the 2nd cat. If you follow that pipe, it forms one single pipe where there is a flange. From the flange to your stock manifolds is your cat pipe. That entire pipe (refer to picture in exhaust sticky thread) is not useable with your lts. You will have to buy an h pipe. Ill try to find pics, hold on.

You need to replace that peice with an H pipe. Either on road or off road depending if you want to run cats. Then, your catback should bolt up to that h pipe i beleive.
