I dont know if anyone still looks @ this thread or not but I found it very very interesting. Ive been a grass-roots drifter for about 4 years. My favorite car so far was my budget-build S14 240sx with a Skyline RB20DET engine. It was so much fun to drive and was a super great chassis to learn on. The cool thing was I build it as I progressed. It already had some sort of lowering springs on it when i got it, but i went ahead and got a used rear diff from a Japanese 180sx. Those 2 simple combinations made the biggest difference. As time went on i added coilovers, strut bars, the RB20DET swap, front-mount intercooler, 3" strait pipe exhaust, full adjustable control arm all around, skyline R33 brakes, and rear subframe collars. the better I got, the more parts I added. I added parts as I improved. Thats the way to do it. Get familiar with how your car reacts and handles, then add parts/change around things around as needed. Not to be the guy who takes 30mins naming off every part he has. Drifting isn't about adding parts to be cool. Drifting is an art-form between man and car. The pavement is your canvas and your car is the brush.
My advice would definitely be try to find some local LEGAL events, sign-up and pay, and go out there and learn learn learn. Yes you will spin out lots and lots your first few events. But sure enough, you'll eventually be linking every corner and making the croud go wild! Believe it or not Ive seen beginners do better in V6 mustangs than gts or cobra. Starting out with gobs of power is ridiculous. In all reality a V6 is probably better balanced with the engine sitting how it does than the V8 cars. Eventually though you'll need that instant torque thrust of a V8. But to start out a V6 with a good grippy clutch it perfect. When you get ready for a few upgrades definitely go with a Cobra rear axle and brakes. 8.8", factory LSD, and vented rear disc brakes. Great combo! Some Mustang drifters even opt for the 99-up Cobra IRS setup.
