Drifting Ideas
I have a 98 with around 145,000 miles. I understand that i am in college and i dont have a lot of money to put into speed so i have decided to take a different route. I am really into drifting and I would like to know what parts and work would be involved into turning the mustang into a good drifter. I was already thinking about stripping the interior and lightening as much as I can. For parts I was thinking:
1. Underdrive Pullies 2. Posi-rear end with 3.73 gears (Its a 5 speed) 3. New suspension, open to reconmendations 4. New Brakes, open to reconmendations 5. Aluminum drive shaft? 6. Exhaust setup I got the car for $1000 so i think its gonna be a good one to learn on, I am gonna try to do most of the work myself. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot

full rollcage, strip your interior, get rid of your bumpers until you get good at it. Get a full coilover system and have it centerbalanced as tight as they can get it. You will need a fast spooling turbo system, not really continuous power as much as a fast hit when you get your revs up so it will start the car spinning. You will also want a 31 spline rear end with a spool or welded rearend if you cant find the spool lock, this will make the car very very hard to drive on the street though since any turn will pretty much slide your tires. Also get a tire sponsor you will need it lol

Ok thanks a lot, I was trying to see if it was possible N/A because i really dont have the money for a turbo. Green two questions, I know i need to get a new suspension setup but i have heard bad things about coilovers? I could be wrong, also would this work as a new rear end Ford Racing 7.5" 28 Spline Traction - LOK Limited Slip Differential at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping! I would like to install this with the gears. And sorry 232 im not on here that much so i thought you guys were just tooling on me. I have another daily driver and like i said i bought the stang for a grand 3 years ago so i dont mind having it off the road for a while.

I like coilovers on a drift car for the fact that most come with struts you can adjust as well so you can make everything really stiff.
but they are expensive. you mainly need, some good good control arms and subframe connectors. Stronger shock and struts and you would be fine. That diff you will blow to pieces you need at least a 31 spline 8.8, but in all honesty if it is going to be just a drag car, get a spool or a welded diff it will help a lot especially beginning since you turn and your going sideways you could do it NA, but itll cost less to go turbo. buy a nice garrett and run a rear mount system, plumbing is pretty easy and itll spool very quick

well you need to get an 8.8 but you essentially get the clutches welded together so that both tires get equal power all the time

If your just getting into it, don't get a turbo yet, build a nice suspension, and get a good feel for your car(i.e. how it slides, how much it takes to slide, know your clutch, how it snaps back when you finish the slide) Learn to Power over your slides, clutch kick, ebrake + power over, and watch the drift king video on youtube. Find an open parking lot and start trying to slide it. It's fun.... you will love it!

Learning on an NA car is a bad idea IMO, if your gonna have a boost car later they act very differently in slides, and the powerband on one is totally new on the next

Here is the thing, and i hate to be brutally honest. That car isnt going to last. Drifting requires A. a hell of alot of torque so you can run low - mid rpms or B. A car that can rev high and has alot up top. A stock non split port stang has neither. Its either gonna blow the hell up within a couple weeks of doing it, (which completely screws you out of a car) or the overall drifting results will be poor.
That being said, i wish you luck because i love drifting. Be carefull with the whole "find an open parking lot" thing, cops HATE when people do donuts and drift around. But i like everything GF has said thus far. You might have mentioned this before, but is your car an auto or a stick? Meanwhile, try to find a local tire shop that will sell you used tires to practice on. |
