Could the 02 scensors do this?

I have a 2001 Mustang, and had to replace the cats on it. I had my local fab guy put it all in, and he put the 02 scensors in the wrong spot so they are reading the exhaust before it goes into the cat. It ran fine for about 2 days, and passed the smog test I had done. Then the check engine light came on, and I figured it was the 02 reading being way off. Well I have been driving it for about a month and a half that way, and the other night, it just started dying on me. I am getting a backfire on decel and she is losing power and feels like the exhaust it plugging up and not reving out. Is it possible that it has started running so rich that she is flooding out? Does anyone think it could just be I need to change the location of the scensors and all would be right with the world again, or would it be more likely a fuel pump going bad type thing???

If he swapped the front and rear o2 the car would run real rich. It may be rich enough to melt the cats and plug up the exhaust. The O2s are one of the 2 most important sensors on the car and should always be wired correctly and operational (at least the front O2s.) If you have a friend with a xcal you can datalog it and see what is going on.

Wish I had someone who had anything like that. Looks like into the dealer it goes for the diagnostic....

hit up autozone or some place that will scan your codes for free and report back. The dealer will cost you $$ and it might be something else you can easily replace.

Yes, had the cel for awhile. Did not have it checked, as I was sure it was just the 02 scensors sending a bad signal. And as far as I knew the worst thing that would happen from running rich aside from less power and bad fuel miles was the possibility of fouling plugs.

If you can afford it, buy an Xcal or tuner that will read DTC's. It has been so helpfull with my car not to mention the gains you get. Its worth being able to read codes alone.

I have been reading on that all day. I am going to get me one in a couple weeks when I get my tax refund in. I am thinking that, and having a shop fab me up some divorced duals and just fix it all. Maybe

Kick ass brother! Good luck. I've bought alot of "crap" for my car. The tuner was one thing I know that is well worth the $400.

Well heard back from the shop, and after being on the diag. they agree the sensors are in the wrong spot and kicking the codes. Both need to be moved. Down fall is that the right side exhaust manifold is cracked and has an exhaust leak. The want $680 for the parts and labor. Tell me that ain't out of line???? Seriously, how hard would it be to change those myself? I have access to a lift but would only have a day to do it. Can that be changed out that fast?

If the manifold is cracked, wait for your refund and do full exhaust, headers back.

Agree'd. But before you do anything else, tke it to another shop and get a second opinion. the Ford dealership was telling me my manifold was cracked. When the other shop took them off and gave them to me guess what? NO CRACKS. The crack was actually still in the mid pipe that THEY fixed under warranty.

BTW- for anyone that may be from Bradenton area. Never use Autoway Ford here.

That is why I am asking how hard are they to do yourself? Anyone else done them? There are a couple of people with some good offers over in the classifieds, and such. Could I get it done in one day on my own?
