Ticking
i have had at least 6 professionals, and one complete idiot look at my car to try and figure out what this ticking is,
Its not an exhaust leak because after adding the new completely new exhaust the ticking has not changed its sound. where its coming from i cant tell, majority of these guys said it was the lifters, i have already ran though marvel mystery oil, and seafoam through crankcase but to no effect. if im driving the ticking seems like it starts really loud at 1500 and the faster i start to go, the faster that ticking gets. if i was to try replacing lifters what am i looking at to do? |

Well if you already ran through cleaning agents then your probably going to have to replace your lifters. Which involves removing the heads. After that im not too sure myself.

You check spark plugs, wires, and vacuum hoses. Just checkin to make sure you go through all the cheap fixes first.

spark plugs dont cause a ticking, those cause a misfire, and you feel that, wires would affect the plugs, therby causing a misfire, and vacuum hoses will make your rpm fluctuate, mine are stable as could be. trust me i already checked everything else, exhaust was just the last one before having to do lifters.
i thought lifters were in the valve covers.....whats in there? edit* sorry ewells, i was typing as you posted that. |

The valve covers sit ontop of the heads. And yes the lifters are under the valve covers. Im not sure if you could do anything without taking the heads off though. You might be able to but I have no idea. I would think you would.

looks like i just need to remove the intake manifold, rocker arms, and pushrods, then i have clear access to the lifters....wish i could find out exactly what my ticking is before doing that though...

Although I agree that bad wires would cause knocking. A bad wire could be arching to a metallic surface and that would certainly sound more like a tick than a knock. Even though you would probably hear both. Just saying replace the cheap shit first. They don't sound like professionals atleast not when it comes to cars if they couldn't find and fix your problem. Sounds like they are just slacking. Hope you didn't have to pay for them not helping. Why did you get a whole new exhaust if there was no exhaust leak?

I have had a ticking too that sounds like its coming from right under the passenger side valve cover. Mine got alot worse when the LTs went on. But then again, alot of things got louder and changed. I havent tried the chemical fix's yet. I dont think the lifters are that hard to change but being a Mustang, sometimes changing the oil is a project.
3.8- Do you know if you can just swap one side out or do you have to do all of them? |

you have access to the lifters. They are held in by a plastic retainer on each side (two small bolts each). In my experience a sticking lifter makes a sound that is much louder than I would describe as a tick. It usually happens on cold mornings before the oil has warmed up. |
