engine oil
so my car has 115,000, i use castrol synthetic 10w30, Mobil makes this oil called 0w30, it says on the back that it exceeds 5w30 and 10w30, does that mean its okay to use 0w30 as a substitute for my 10w30? Castrol just came out with the same thing, called castrol edge, this oil comes in a 5w40 and 10w60! im just curious about, i take engine oil in my car more seriously then i do actual cleaning of the car...and you should see the shelf of cleaning parts for my car....ill post a pic...

i had one guy come into work the other day and bought 0w30 for his car, it had lke 122,000 miles on it, he said that since it said exceeds 10w30 on the back that it was ok, im not sure about it but all this time im thinking that 10w30 is better for a high mileage car, anyone else?

You need to understand the way the numbers work.
First off the first number is the viscosity of the oil on cold starts or it being cold...IE NOT engine temps. The lower the number the lower the viscosity...meaning in colder climates you want a lower number, hotter climates, you want a higher number, it helps in cold climates with cold starts, as the motor will turn over easier when it is below freezing. The 'W' doesn't stand for "Weight" like most think. It actually stands for 'Winter'. The second number is the viscosity of the oil when warm or at operating temps. You want to get away with the thinnest oil you can use without causing engine damage or excessive wear. Whatever it calls for from the factory is what you should use. They set the motor up for a certain oil and I have actually seen dyno graphs and test where the motors have lost power because they run a different viscosity oil than recommended by Ford. I run what my 710 cap tells me to. 5w-20. Hope that helps. |

On my last oil change, I went with the Mobil One Synthetic (I use the recommended in the winter here in FL because the temps are average...in the summer I use one step heavier than recommended). Anyway, I had been running Pennzoil Synthetic. About 4 weeks into the Mobil One, I developed a sticking lifter. I thought Mobil One was supposed to be the best? Now I know lifters can get sticky from alot of things but it was weird that it happend after the Mobil One was put in. I used 3/4 bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil or whatever thats called and it nearly eliminated the sticking.
Next oil change, Im looking for a new oil. Im going to check out the castrol. The only other thing is that Ive been told that its bad on your seals and gaskets to switch away from Mobil One Synthetic after you start using it. Is that bullshit or truth? |

As for the 0w30 comparing to 10w30 like someone else said you have to understand what the numbers mean. Once youre up to operating temps the 10w30 and 0w30 will be the same property wise. Whats different is the 0w30 will be thinner at startup. Last edited by ajm; February 10th, 2009 at 10:42 PM. |
