Noisy steering

I've noticed it getting worse. My steering hasnt changed at all as far as "play" or control. I checked the level and it was perfect and the color looked a little black but not out of the ordinary. There was no real smell to it either...no burnt smell or anything.

So I consulted with my Haynes book. I hope its not the power steering going out but it may be. One thing they mentioned is that a clogged steering fluid filter can cause excessive noise. However, they never tell you where or how to check the filter not to mention replace or clean it.

Anyone have any insight on a power steering filter before I start looking into the price of a new system?

Some cars have a power steering fluid cooler that's a tiny radiator built into one of the PS lines. If you have a filter, it's going to be in the PS line(s). Have you tried Lucas PS Stop Leak? I don't like the brand, but that single product I do use because it quiets down the noise.

I went ahead and used an old turkey baster to siphon some of the fluid out. It was very black and thin. I used about a half a bottle of "stop leak" which says it will quiet down the motor and help stop leaks. I dont have any leaks but I guess it wont hurt anyway. We'll see if it quiets it down a bit.

I looked and followed the PS line and didnt see a cooler or filter.

I remember when a friend and I were working on his car at 4 AM in a parking lot next to a grocery store. When we saw turkey basters were on sale for half off, we were so insanely happy partly from buying cheaper turkey basters and also from the high of fatigue. That fond memory comes up every time I think of PS fluid flushes.
