go to your local autozone and ask them and they can also test your alternator for free

I already had it tested, that is why I am looking for another one. Auto Zone only has a stock replacement that is 105 amps. I am trying to find one that is over that (High Output) and need to know a place I can get one, and a safe amp range.

Ive seen 140's for sale. If I remember right, you have to replace some wiring and fuses from the stock setup when you upgrade.

I found this one here:

MUSTANG 3.8L 200 AMP HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR 01 02 03 04 8266: 8266-200 AMP DB Electrical Starter-Alternator

combined with this wiring kit:

FORD CHEVY HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR FUSE BLOCK WIRING KIT 101: WIRING KIT-101 4 GAUGE- 6 FT - 250AMP ANL FUSE DB Electrical Starter-Alternator

Now, my question is, will 200amps be ok for my car? I do not want to fry anything... Also, how hard is it to replace the wire goin from the altrenator to the starter (I think it goes there first) I have always noticed that wire goes up under and behind the engine somewhere.

I looked in my Haines and it doesnt look to hard. I was looking for an HO alternator at one time myself. I decided against it simply because I couldnt get enough info on "frying" shit and any other unwanted side effects. I dont have an aftermarket stereo or anything that really needs the juice. I was just feeling like the stock alt wasnt doing a good enough job. hopefully someone will chime in on this thread that has one or knows. Im curious too.

I do have an aftermarket sound system, and a bunch of electrical componets. I agree that I do not think the stock one is pumping enough. Would be great to get a HO but I may go with a stock if I can not find more info.

Another question... install... can it be done at home? I know its 2 bolts, Wire bolt, and the part I am unsure on; the belt.

Just lift the tensioner enuff to slide the belt off the alt. and you`ll be fine. alt. are one of easier things to replace on these things.

^pretty much thats it for an install,

i would think that as long as you upgraded the wire and a fuse or two the other fuses would keep your shit from "frying". keep a variety pack of fuses on hand just in case.

The tensioner is a lever with a pully on it. On my 2001 V6 it is located on the passanger side of the engine (in the front, of course).

The automatic tensioner is one of the greatest things ever put onto cars. It makes changing/removing the drive belt easy as pie.

Just pop a 3/4" rachet (no socket on it, just the square part of the socket wrench) into the square hole on the side of the tensioner and pull (or push) so it removes tension from the belt. Then, slide the belt off. Should take less than a min.

Put a breaker bar on the end of your socket wrench to make releasing the tension even easier. Sometimes it can take a fair amount of force to release tension and the extra leverage really helps. Don't worry you can't break anything doing this, unless you try really, really hard and do something very stupid. Even then I don't see how you could break anything.
