v6 to v8 engine swap

ok i have a 97 3.8l stang and a buddy of mine is taking his 96 4.6l out and upgrading to a 2000 4.6l. i have the option to buy this engine and build it then drop it in my car or mod my v6. i have an uncle who can polish and port heads so i can get that done for cheap. im just hung up on wether or not to get the 4.6 or mod out my 3.8. any suggestions?

hmmm idk its a possiblity....if it was me and i had the means and measure to throw the v8 in my car i prolly would but...u cant just dump a v8 engine and your...wiring harnes's,computers, making fit ect and you looking at about 500 extra to install it and get it to run right....so 700 total is just maybe a little to high of an estimate...idk if you have the means and measure throw the v8 in there ur going to need exhaust if u get the v8 so u gotta lot of work if u get the v8

that makes since. and i have 18 inch 03cobra rims and a badass stereo system in it so its not like its a bone stock sixxer but i was just wantin a little more hp. i was also thinkin about throwin a true dual exhaust on there for the sound and the look.

I agree! 200 is a good deal. And as for the parts you can always go to a junkyard and get them for cheap. Are you doing most of the work yourself?

yeah i have the garage to do most of the work and all the tools you can dream of. i took the 289 out of my dads 1968 mustang so i have the basic idea of taking an engine out and putting one back in. all i think i should needs is motor mounts some new clutch parts and thats about it. the rest of the motor is complet inc. alternator starter water pump etc. im in pretty good shape if i get it.

You'll probably need a wiring harness and computer off of the same model too, if u dont have that. But still you can get those for cheap from a junk yard. And since you probably arent going to be paying for labor I say thats a really good deal, im very jealous actually, lol.

thanks man. sry about making you jealous but the only reason i got the motor so cheap is because my buddy got the 2000 motor for 500 b4 the guy knew what he had. haha he was pissed bcua those motors are goin for 1500 on eby lol. but yeah i think im in a good position with it. i dont have the harness or comp yet but like you said i can get it from a junkyard. then i can start thinkin about performance. it should hook up to my tranny right?

Oh i forgot about that! I think youll need to get a new drivetrain as well, from the tranny back. Id recomend maybe buying a cheap wrecked donor car.

Swaps can prove to be expensive, but since you got the engine for 200 and are doing your own work itll still be a lot less expensive than buying a gt.

he doesnt need a new tranny.. get a bigger rear axle, all the harnesses and other extranious pieces you need to mount and install the engine and thats that.. youll want a hellasiously good tune.. prolly take the GT gauges off a gt in the junkyard because your redlines will be a bit off.. i think in that year they redlined at 6,000 the v6 redlined at what 5,000.. anyways it wont be too hard if you can install it all yourself.. you wont need to stretch the frame like some guy said.. all mustangs of similar body types will have the same frames.. like my mustang would have the same fram as a 02 GT or 03 Mach 1 or 04 Cobra.. doesnt matter

I beat a Cobra.. well, needless to say he isn't talking, he's just pissed.
