Straight Pipes?

So with the V6 being an even-firing engine, I was considering straight pipes as one of my many exhaust options...

I know it will be really loud and can be raspy, but for the sake of curiosity would I be able to run straights without a crossover all the way from my stock headers thru to the rear end... Welding a pair of Flowmasters or MAC mufflers on and removing the cat back?

Right now I have...

Stock Headers
Y Pipe
Pypes Cat Back Dual Exhaust (not true dual)

All I'm looking for would be the best straight pipe setup. I'm not looking for your personal opinion on the sound quality because I know what I like, and as its been said so many times before on here, it's your car, do what YOU like to it.

Thanks in advance!

(u said u didn't want to hear it, but....)
my sister straight piped her v6 stang...it sounded so shity i took to back and paid for some generic mufflers to be welded in..

as for getting it done...yes, any shop can custom fab tubing to run from the headers to the rear and weld in anything you'd like...thats what i have (check siggy), a custom set-up

Yes it can be done on a v6 mustang. I will reserve my opinion on how it sounds.

Haha thank you to both of you!

So as long as I weld in some mufflers it will reduce the rasp a bit, correct?

Would I be better off running straights to the catback and replacing the mufflers on the catback, or doing a straight setup from headers to rear?

I would run a crossover honestly. it's still dual exhaust. yes, mufflers are a good thing.

Hmmm so why would you say crossover?
...Just out of curiosity

And yes, as I stated in my first post, whether I ran straights to the catback, or in place of the cat back, I would always have mufflers.

I would run a crossover to even out the exhaust flow.

Good point.
So what would you say to...

--Header --> --O/R H Pipe --> Straight Pipe ---> Muffler ---> Tip

Ahh! Thank you!

So wit hthe H in-place, it would even out both the flow and de-rasp the tone a bit, correct?

I'm assuming that because the straight pipes are after the middy, that the tone would be a little more bareable?

Also, I know that MAC's O/R H-Pipe is about $180, and Flowmasters are about $90ea, how much should I expect to pay, knowing that it'll be $360 for the H and Mufflers? Cost including parts and install?

yes the h pipe would even out the flow and would not be as raspy as straight pipes or an x pipe. In the higher rpm range it will always sound a bit ricey (welcome to the life of a v6 mustang) but that's life. Prices range honestly, I payed around $400 to have my exhaust custom built on one of my v6 mustangs.

Dude...
Thats not going to be loud. Not at all. I ran dual flowmaster for almost a year with no crossover. I've heard cars with flowmasters and an X pipe. Its not much different to the average ear. Its not loud by any means.

Keeping your banks "seperate" without a crossover is THE BEST setup IMO on a 6er. The simple reason being is for diagnostics. Since there is no performance gain and very little sound difference, I see no advantage to crossing over.

I learned the value real quick of staying "straight back". You can "listen" to each side and tell where there are problems coming from. Also, if you develop a "leak", it keeps it isolated to one side. Also, it keeps the money for a crossover in your wallet. There are more advantages to keeping the seperate.

Just an opinion though,,, like assholes, we all have one.

Blue, I need to get a video of my setup with sound. Its not bad after all this messing around with it Ive done.

In fact, look in the exhaust clips threads for my post. What you want about is pretty much exactly what I have in that vid (I have an aftermarket intake and an xcal3 I was running with it though which will make the sound a bit different) but its straight back with flowmasters no crossover.

JAsonic,

Sounds really good! Thanks for the link. I'm still wrestling back and forth with which setup to go with, but yours didn't sound raspy at all. Definitely liked it... Definitely loud.

Well i have divorced straight pipes running to duel flows. It sounds fine to me. Not that big of a difference to me. But I dont know what the difference in sound is between the 4.0 and the 3.8 engines would be.

The crossover will mellow out the exhaust at upper rpms, but it won't do anything as far as performance or evening out exhaust gases. I'd probably say you should use an H-pipe though, as our sixers tend to get really nasty sounding up top without cats.
