3.8 to 5.0 V8

I recently bought a 94 convertible from a friend, and the engine is shot. I am looking into putting a larger v8 in the car. is this possible? I was told that the mustang chassis was built around the v8 engine.... is this true?

Thanks for the help.... Im clearly a novice. ( First Car )

I mean yea it is pretty much true but the v6's dont have as beefed up bodies and body parts as a v8 does. For example v8 have bigger rear axles to handle the power.

You can but its a lot of work and since you're a novice a lot of money as well. I recommend you just buy another 3.8 motor and do the split port swap. I forget everything you need to do, but what it does is give you the amount of power that a 99-04 v6 has so you go from 145-190. Here's something that may help: Split-Port Swap - 3.8Wiki

The stock v6 axles can handles more than the measly 205 hp that a 5.0 has.

The axles are the same size in the V8 and the V8 ... 28spline. That is to say the same in the 7.5" and 8.8". The size difference is in the differential parts like the gears and traction lock. You can buy tloks with 31spline and get bigger axles, but its the internals of the diff that breaks first, not the axles.

I recently learned this first hand.

dont forget about the tq though...youll be able to handle the stock 5.0s tq with the 7.5, but if you plan on modding the 5.0 youd probably want to go with the 8.8

I had been thinking about doing this in the coming years... Alleviates the problem of paying GT insurance, which for someone my age, is astronomical.

If you decide to go ahead with the 5.0 swap, let me know!

i wouldn't change it til it breaks. some fox's used to come with 7.5 rears in those 5.0's.

Put a split port v6 in it, and make the same power as the 5.sl0w

it would be smarter to plan ahead and get the 8.8 if you want to do a decent amount of modding to the the 5.0 but keep the 7.5 if youre only going to do a couple mods.

(i completely agree with "better safe than sorry" though)
