99 Cobra IRS rear end or beef up 7.5 stock?

I have a chance to pick up a 99 cobra IRS rear end with 3.27 gearing with a little of 70K miles on it for $400.00.

I would like to change to 3.73 and detroit T-loc (or is a loc in there already?)..is it worth it?

Or should I just get a t-loc and gearing for my 7.5?

Is that a good deal?

I don't plan on getting bigtime horsepower, so I think I can get away with beefing up the 7.5, but is this a good price and oppurtunity to do that swap?

what do you guys think?

well, you dont even need an 8.8 in rear end until you go forced induction, but a t-lok and gears will run over $400 after you get it installed, and you should be able to install the 9" rear end on your own. the 9" will have a t-lok, and a detroit tru trac isnt very streetable, so a t-lok is advised if youre not going to make too much power.
its a very good price, but youll just be having extra weight that could be avoided. but the final decision is up to you

if i can recall from talking to cobra guys around here...they prefer a GT rear end if they wanted to get a 8.8 over the cobra rear set-up...something about the difference between drag vs track racing....i don't know for sure, but i thought this might spark an idea and give ur thread a bumb

Yep, cobra rear end is better for people who are going to auto-x and road course. And it will require you to change your exhaust also.

i didnt even think about that, that will run you a couple hundred more, which basically makes the 9" irs not worth it at all on a low power v6.

Yeah..

I never really heard much about IRS rear's. Only swapping out for GT rear ends, so I have no idea what is expected. He was also going to include the catback for the axle, so I guess the exhaust my existing exhaust might have to be modified. Ah...I think I might just stick with my 7.5 and gear it to 3.73 and t-loc her.

BTW..is the IRS 9" rear end???...DAYUM!!!

Cobra's still have an 8.8"

The IRS is better for handling. So if you want it to be a car that handles better than your average mustang you can go the irs way, but if you plan on drag racing it keep a solid axle. The IRS is known for wheel hop in Cobras especially the 03-04 which can all sorts of problems. Now granted if your not looking for tons of power you probably won't be thinking of the power range of the 03-04 Cobras. Not saying they have a lot, but just saying that might be out of the range your looking at.

IRS > 8.8 solid > 7.5 solid

IRS hooks better on the street
IRS hooks better on the track (when setup properly)
IRS ride quality is TONs better.

I know. I traded my solid for an IRS.

I made over 650-700rwhp and its still together. Stock axles, stock Posi, IRS brace at a minimum, and poly bushing if you can.

FOr your application, you can probably just to IRS brace and springs. It will hold a lot and keep the axle hop down.

I don't plan on going any higher with the horsepower then what my stock engine with headers and CAI can push out.

I guess makes more sense to keep my 7.5. So I think I might just T-loc and 3.73 the rear end.

IRS > 8.8 solid > 7.5 solid
ur one of the few to go that route....i know a few cobra guys that went to the solid 8.8 because of launching issues
