I don't know about the first part, but i do know you'll need 3 quarts of ATF. I just changed my fluid and thats how much it took.

You may have to go to Ford for the oil pan. It will take more like 4-5 qts of trans. fluid. I would recommend getting the fluid from Ford. I think the Ford gasket is better, since it is a reusable rubber gasket. You probably should also replace the filter if it hasn't been done recently.
To remove the pan just take out all the bolts but the corner ones. Then loosen the corner bolts and try to get most of the fluid into a drain pan. Likely you will spill some. The pan bolts are torqued to ~10 ft-lbs. |

3, I think the torque converter itself almost holds 3....

I explained how to remove it above.
Perhaps the amount of fluid required depends on the year, but for a 99 Mustang, with the trans and converter both drained it took about 10 qts to refill it. |

Here's a fancy cast aluminum oil pan if you want to upgrade.

Very simple. Get you a 10mm socket, extension and ratchet. Remove the 14 bolts around the pan, put the new one on and reinstall all 14 bolts torquing to spec. If you dont have a torque wrench just get them pretty snug. Should take 4-5 quarts of fluid. Your best bet is to put in 3, start it up and let it run for a bit, check the fluid, add more if needed. Once you see some fluid on the bottom of the dip stick let it sit and get to operating temp. Add 2oz's at a time waiting a 10-15 seconds between checking the fluid, continue until you hit the full mark. Go for a cruise and check the fluid again, add more if needed.
For needing a pan I doubt a regular ole parts store is gonna have one. If you want a factory one go to ford and order one or go get one from a junk yard. Or you can get an aftermarket one. Last edited by ajm; March 17th, 2009 at 06:27 PM. |

There is a grommet in the bell housing for access to the torque converter drain plug. If that's where it's leaking from, I think there is a leak inside the bell housing, possibly from the seal in the front of the transmission. That seal is in the front of the transmission oil pump.
