Go to americanmuscle.com

They have everything mustang, including your gears, bearing kit, and gear oil. I would advise getting a very trustworthy shop to do the install. Some place that has done them multiple times before as things are not exactly a "It can't be that hard" job

^ +1. Installing it yourself can lead to some serious gear problems. It's just better to let experienced hands and more expensive tools do the job. They shouldn't charge you more than 250 for an install.

Most places will say 200-400 for install so don't drop to the floor when they give you that estimate.

Theyre usually the same price place to place,americanmuscle.com wouldnt be a bad place to get everything at once though. The install isnt that hard, everyone makes it out to be way more than what it is but when you consider half of them couldnt prolly do springs it makes sense. Check the link below, although its for an 8.8 itll still get the point across if youre looking/trying to decide to do it yourself and want a little info on whats involved to help you decide.

alright, whatever dont come crying on here when your gears whine or break. Because I will flip out on you.

Bascially dont do it yourself. Gears will cost you about $200 + new wheel bearings $20 + oil $30 + install kit $75. So you are looking at $325 in parts alone. Most shops charge about 200-300 in labor. Plan on spending about $600-650 for the whole thing.

Although it's been said multiple times, a gear swap is an extremely precise installation and is very very easy to mess up if you are not experienced. Just because you are mechanically inclined doesn't mean you'll be able to do it properly. Ask anyone who has rebuilt their engine before, and I bet a lot of them will say they won't even touch their rear end themselves.

well i say i dont plan on taking it to a shop to do it because my dad was a certified mechanic, although he hasnt worked in that field for 28 years gears havent changed much, i also have a roommate that is a certified mechanic currently. so what im asking is from the people that have done it themselves how long did it take, what did you have to do etc.

ps and i need at least one new wheel bearing anyway, so ill have one side apart already...

takes about 2 hours or so if you have a decent understanding of whats going on, as for "what did you have to do" I dont really know how to explain that part other than saying to check the link above.

might as well do it then. Itll save you the money and you can get a good laugh at everyone around here that claims how hard it is (yet theyve never done it) once you do it and realize its not that complicated.

the "hardest" part is setting the pinon preload; and it really isnt hard which is why I put the quotes, its just tedious since you have to turn the nut a very small amount, check it, and repeat until you get it just right and if you go over you have to start over again with a new crush sleeve

sounds like timing in a small engine. i race professional motocross so i rebuild top ends for my bike a lot, timing is such a pain in the ass lol. anyway, that doesnt sound horrible, just... like you said tedious

yup thats the best way I can describe the whole process. Timing is exactly what id compare it to. Not hard/complicated just a pain in the ass. People say "oh no its soooo hard because things have to be exact blah blah blah". Well as long as you can do some basic math and use a dial indicator and dial caliper theres not much to it besides turning some wrenches. Id rather do gears than change a valve cover gasket to be honest with you, and although things do need to be exact its not like they have to be down to a perfect number. For example if youre setting the backlash you obviously want to get it as close as you can to to the measurement of your "old backlash" but as long as its within the spec (lets say .004" - .010") youre good. Those arent exact numbers btw I just made them up.

I dont blame. I dont think theres been one dealership or shop that ive worked at where people didnt burn out or atleast chirp the tires in a few peoples cars a day (and they werent even upgraded/fast cars, im talkin fusions, mkzs, f150s,expiditions,etc), and yes above all why pay someone for something you can do. Thanks.
