I've installed the B&M Shift Improver kit in a '72 Olds Cutlass, '73 Buick Century, '76 Pontiac Grand Prix and a '66 Mustang but I don't know if the new, computer controled transmissions need one. I'm pretty sure you can just plug into the OBD II port and re-program your shifts with a hand held programer. If I'm wrong can someone let me know.

shift kits are pretty good mods. they'll extend the life of your tranny, give quicker and firmer shifts, and will strengthen it as well.

I agree that they will help the bands last a lot longer since they're closing faster and not getting as much ware on them per shift but I can't see how they'd make the trans any stronger. You're only messing with a few check balls and the plate in the valve body, not modding anything "in" the trans so it'll not be any stronger but it'll work better.

ive used the b&m, transgo, and fairbanks. Theyre all good kits, nothing bad to say about any of them. The only one I dont like is the jmod. Reason being all it does it give you faster/firmer shifts. It does not actually help any weak links in the valve body such as valves wearing prematurely which = loss of line pressure.
People that dont know better will tell you "dont do a shift kit just get a tuner". Once again just like the jmod all a tuner will do is give you faster/firmer shifts. It wont do any good for helping out some weak links in the valve body. All the tuner will do is increase your line pressure. |

Im not saying its bad, im sure it does its job. Im just saying if youre gonna do the jmod why not just go ahead and take a step up and do a shift kit. If you want faster/firmer shifts yea sure its fine, but for the money spent doing and since your dropping the valve body anyways whats a bit more money to do things a bit better.
