04 V6 BIG issue with Brakes and Transmission

OK, here is the story, My son has an 04 V6 mustang well kept up with a Cobeaq Body kit and rims. He left Thursday last week to drive to Orlando from New Orleans. When he got to I-65 before Mobile he called me saying his car could be reved up like in neutral while on the interstate and would not go over 45 mph. I told him pull over into a shopping center and I barrowed a friends tow truck and drove to get him. I towed his girl friends car to them so they could continue their trip and I would tow the car back to N.O.
Here is the Big Situation <<<<
I hooked up the Mustang from the front on the rear wheel lift of the wrecker,
put the car in Neutral and Released the Emergency/Parking brake and left the car motor running so the converter would have fluid flowing through it since the rear wheels would be spinning ( I didn't want to hurt the transmission any more then it could have been)
When I drove to the interstate I noticed the car felt a little heavy over pulling his girl friends car. But in a Chevy 4500 with a Catipillar motor I really didnt think there was a problem. So Once on the hwy about 3 miles into the ride I noticed sparks flying out from the car. I thought it was the chain Attachecd came loose and was dragging on the street.I pulled over and found the Rear Brake Rotors were Glowing ORANGE and had Decintigrated mostly ans were smoking. So I immediatly got the Fire Extinguisher and cooled them off with the Powder that sprayed from it. I had to hook the car up from the front at ths point and pull it home from the rear of the car in the air. This time no problem.

My question is What The Hell could have caused this to happen????
I had to replace the rear rotors, Brake Calipers, And pads along with the hardware and flush out the brake fluid from the lines.

Now that the car is fixed, it runs fine but once it shifts into the Overdrive it free revs again. I pressed the Overdrive Off button and it will drive fine. Is the transmission screwed or is it a silinoid or converter issue.

Thanks for listening to my Rant. Suggestions or Soultions welcome to what happened to the Rear Brakes to make them burn up like they did

automatics are such a pain in the ass, sounds kinda like a converter, but autos have so many switches and solenoids and such.

"When he got to I-65 before Mobile he called me saying his car could be reved up like in neutral while on the interstate and would not go over 45 mph."

That right there wants to make me think its something with the torque converter. Have you dropped the pan to take a look at the fluid just as a starting point.

not yet but I am bringing it back to the shop tomorrow for the tranny to be checked. I just cant figure what happened to make the rear brakes melt down/decintigrate like they did. ( the E Brake was all the way down.
