screeching noise

When I turn the steering wheel, wether the car is on or off, I hear a somewhat high pitched squeel. (Not as high pitched as Im used to hearing when a car is low on power steering fluid). I also hear this when I hit smaller bumps. Any ideas of what this may be?

Willis is there any play in your steering wheel? Like you can move it somewhat back and forth without it turning the wheels?

no and its been like this for about 7 months. its not that bad but it can get annoying, especially on a sharper turn because it pops in almost an interval like way. its hard to explain lol.

is it only when turning, or just worse when turning? I had a *very* similar sounding issue where the wheel would sort of shift by itself while driving (more noticeably while turning though) in a rythmic way, and it it be faster the faster i was going.
turns out it was one of my front tires. it was shot and needed to be replaced. the bulge (which was barely noticeable ) was throwing everything off balance. new tire = fixed

but i didnt have much of a squeal (i only get that at full turn lock, which i think is common in these cars..) so it may be unrelated..

So do I. Check your power steering fluid. Mine was low, I added to it. It still does it, but it's hardly noticible, and only when I'm not moving.

oughta curiousity, what would he be looking for when he goes to inspect the ball joints?

my 2 cents worth.... buy a needle adapter fitting for a grease gun(any auto parts will/should know what your talking about) then jack you car up and you put it in the rubber boot around you ball joint or tie rod end and inject the front end grease of your choice. works nine outta ten times and will quite the screech or eliminate it all together. also when your check you front end jack it up under the control arm and hold onto the front of the tire and push in and pull out, that consists of shaking it down and you will feel it either loose or no play at all. but as far as the screeching goes the needle adapter will work Ive used this many times, as my job calls for creativity on special occasions because most new cars don't come with grease zurts any more, so i can vouch for it.

Ball joints will/may be torn or worn... they have a rubber seal that holds the grease in that gets worn down over time (wish I had a pic of my stockers they were horrid, absolutely zero grease holding in them). If this is the case of the OP, then he has metal on metal contact with no grease, causing the squeal. It's easy to tell if they're bad by looking at them.
