help! car only goes up to 40mph

I have a 94 convertible mustang gt 3.8L, and one day on the road it just started blowing alot of smoke with water or anti-freeze from both sides of the exhausts, so my friend told me that it may be the head caskets so i had them changed and the smoke has stopped. After that i got the car back on the road but now the car only runs up to 40mph and wont switch gears, its an automatic. Is it that the transmission is going bad? and what should i do about it?

your transmission has entered limp mode it will not go over 40mph this mode only allows the car to safely be driving to a service center i used to apprentice at a ford dealership u need tranny service bud. could be as easy as a leak causing low pressure, broken cushioning spring, valve body failure... or u could have taken a gear out.

ummm were you in a low gear? Make sure it is in drive. Then take it back to the place that did your head gasket could be they did something wrong and the computer is not letting you out of 1st and is in catastrophic failure mode.

1 or 2 days before all the smoke started coming out of the exhausts and before i had gotten the head gaskets changed, the rpms were acting up, going very high and finally switching gears, then it wouldnt switch from 1st gear and would go up to about 60, then the smoke thing happened and i had them changed, and i thought that would have fixed the car but it didnt and just goes up to 40mph very slowly, the mechanic that changed my head gaskets did tell me that i needed to change my transmission but he felt it wasnt worth putting that much money on a automatic and such a weak motor, so thats y I asked you guys if you guys think its the transmission. what should i do about the whole situation?

how many miles you got I am guessing a lot since you blew a head gasket. Either get new engine and tranny or best bet you need a new car

thats it.... man that sucks. how much did you pay for it? if it comes down to you needing a new tranny. then you figure out if its worth spending the money on. expect to spend a few grand. i hope it is something like a wire.

yeah I paid 6 for a 00 with 52000 miles 2 years ago. That car was run very very hard if you've already blown a head gasket. Your looking at 4-5 grand to fix it get a newer car.
