Odd Noise... Part 2

Well, a couple of months ago I posted about an odd clicking/tapping/slapping type of noise coming from the rear of my car. It sounds like it is coming from the area of my rear passenger side. I have always had this problem. The noise only happens when the car is in drive, and the car has to be stopped for it to happen. I have no idea what it could be. Now I have a video of it. I was sitting in my car tonight and heard it louder than ever, so I recorded it on my phone and posted it for you all to hear. After listening please tell me if you can get any clue as to what is cauing this noise...

idk, but you should probably take it to a mechanic.

I feel like if it goes to a mechanic they will go and "Look for the problem", charge me 100 bucks an hour, and end up finding nothing. It only happens at complete stops when it is in drive, its very odd.

Yeah, its wierd! At first it sounded like a hole in your muffler but you say the car has to be stopped but in drive? ..mmmm...youre just going to have to Jack the car up and put it on jackstands, get underneath there and find out where its coming from! Its hard to tell through a recording but it really sounds like a sputtering exhaust leak!..maybe you have a hole in an exhaust pipe somewhere?...see your muffler on a stock v6 is underneath the driver side rear seat..thats why I would check there first! theres nothing under the passenger side rear seat.

Its aftermarket exhaust...It has headers, x pipe, and flowmaster 40's. Its annoying becuse I have to drive te car around for it to happen, and since it gets driven touching the exhaust really cant be happening. It sounds like more from the wheel area, but I could be wrong if there is an echo or something like that. I guess ill have to jack it up and try to find out.

It sounds like a leak to me..and Ive had them where if you speed up they go away.. but the being "in drive" thing makes that unlikley..maybe an exhaust hanger or a clamp came loose and its rattleing under the vibration of Idle?...just hope that its not your differential!!

Yeah, me too. It only happens in drive. As soon as its in any other gear its gone. The recording does not do the best job, but its more of a tapping noise. I was thinking maybe it was a loose clip or clamp, I will have to go check and see. Hopefully I can find it before I find what it is the hard way...

I would think that if it was your differential or an axle (because the drive axle is on that side!) It would get WORSE as you but more load on it not better, and just sitting there in drive, the drive shaft isnt spinning so I dont get it! It must be something really simple and stupid! Lets HOPE!

Yeah, I am hoping it could just be a loose clip or something like that, and like you said the vibrations from being in drive might get to to rattle just the right way. I hope its something stupid...

Im still listening to it and MAN it rattles at the same fequency as an exhaust pipe rattles, know what I mean? I can just imagine an exhaust tip just bouncing up and down to that beat! cant you?

Yeah, I think thats what it could be too. I'll jack it up tomorrow and check, and I figure it could be something stupid like the exhaust because it does not happen all the time.
