Smoking Exhaust Headers

I just changed the head gaskets on my 94 3.8, got her all back together, and the exhaust headers get real hot, real quick, and smoke. Smells like burning rubber, yet nothings touching the headers, and its happening equally on both sides. I haven't run it long enough for the coolant to get very hot, so the engine temp is fairly low, yet the heat from around the headers is massive. Anyone have and ideas?

Check that all the electrical connectors and vacuum lines are connected correctly. Possibly something is causing the fuel air ratio to be wrong and increasing the combustion temperature. Possibly some large vacuum leak or the oxygen sensors not connected.

I had a similar problem with mine after doing a similar tear down but after making sure the coolant was at the proper level it ran much better.

Did you clean the area on the manifold where the gaskets are before putting on the new ones?

Did you use PB blaster or some other lubricant on the bolts that could be burning off? Headers are going to get hot quickly...

Turns out the coolant level in the engine was super low and everything was getting burning hot . After 30 minutes of bleeding, finally got coolant into the block, and shes running great now. Good timing, selling her tomorrow to buy a gt
