car running weird

ok so i got a 02 v6 5spd with k&n cai, udp, dual exhaust, sct xcal 3 if any of these make a difference. well i recently cleaned my k&n filter and idk if i used to much oil. i mean if i did wut would it really harm? jc. i noticed now that my car when i go to shift makes a weird noise that i never really noticed it almost sounds like a little blow off valve. would that be the filter cuz i used to much oil? and if so should i just re clean it and oil it and make sure to use less oil? and if i did use too much oil will it really harm anything to bad so ik how urgent it is to re clean. thanks

idk i mean it kinda does. it is towards the higher end i mean i have had the k&n for about a yr and a half. i didnt notice anything but it could be i just didnt hear it. it kinda happnes most if i like punch the gas quick and let off then shift so it might be how it makes the noise at high rpms. oh and on the other part if i did over oil it would it cause great harm to my engine like the recharge kit said? im kinda new to this whole k&n thing. thanks

If it only happens when you shift, its probably not your CAI.

If you over oil the filter, there is a chance it could get the MAF sensor dirty and your car would run like ass.

take apart what you just did when oiling and recheck and reassemble. it didn't happen just for coincidence. you probably didn't put together 100% or maybe knocked something else loose in the process. its worth a try.

If it isn't affecting performance then I doubt you're really hurting much, as said just check to see if any oil is carrying up the intake to the MAF and such. CAI's will make a noise as described when the butterfly valve in throttle body closes and air is circulated back thru the intake piping. Mine does this towards higher RPM's and isn't really noticeable when shifting around 2k. Maybe the filter needed a good cleaning and the flow is a lil more now so more air=more sound? I dunno... but doesn't sound like it's broken.

my car only makes that noise when i shift and its definitely the cai.

and i was kind of thinking what goren was thinking...maybe having more air coming in because of the cleaner filter, you also have more air rushing out when the throttle body closes, so the noise is louder and more noticeable?

and to codeman ...the higher i take the rpms, the louder the noise is, and like mooses said, if you overoiled, you would be able to feel a difference. i think its no big deal since you havent said that your car is running terrible, its just making a noise.

huh ..... wonder why, im trying to figure out how shifting would affect the CAI. Then again I dont have a manual so there might be something involved with the gas pedal or whatnot that im not aware of when shifting.

i think goren explained it, but im not sure.
but if he didnt...when i take my foot off the gas to shift, the throttle body closes, and so all the air still in the intake wants to escape so it passes back through the intake tube, and thats when the noise is made.

edit-ya goren explained it

yep, if something was going wrong because of an over-oiled filter, youd feel it. and checking/cleaning the maf would be a good idea just in case, although i doubt theres anything wrong. and your welcome!

clean filter sucks more air and will make a sound similar to a bov. try just quickly reving the engine from idle and see if you hear it. most likely the reason you are hearing it at shift points is because you are shifting at higher rpms and then getting right back into the gas quickly as you let out the clutch and that is why you are hearing it. o and over oiling the filter will not harm your engine but can dirty up your maf wire, i would not worry about the over oil if the car begins to hesitate or driveability goes down slightly clean the maf with maf cleaner do not use brake cleaner or anything else along those lines.

ok so im pretty sure it is just the filter. i just got used to it bein dirty so it wasnt as loud. cuz thinkin back to when i got it i loved how it sounded like my car was turboed. so im sure it is just the air rushin back out when the throttle butterfly is closed. that makes sense.
