Yeah if you are saying what I think you are saying about the price difference, you will pay WAY less for just an 8.8 rear end that has gears already in it.
Say even IF you do pay $500 for it, still cheaper considering $200 for the Tlok and Gears + another $200 or so for labor to install the gears and tlok (which I would not recomend doing yourself unless you know what you are doing). And you can swap rear ends pretty easily with a friend that has either done it before or is mechanically inclined. |

OK you'll have the mechanical know-how to install a whole rear-end but not just gears? Come on now if you're going to compare prices on two different options, you have to include every price to make it accurate. If you include labor for one option (i.e. gear install) you have to say you'll have labor cost for installing the whole rear end. (8.8 option). Furthermore I think that this is a prime example of suck and spit syndrome where someone reads threads on here all day then regurgetates the information without any personal knowledge on the subject. If you've never done a gear/tlok install then don't offer advice. It's tedious because you have to line the teeth up properly (timing) but it isn't impossible. Neither would a rear-end swap be but it requires mechanical knowledge, common sense, the correct tools, some luck and a lot of patience.

+1, im not saying i disagree with the 8.8 swap, but if you dont plan to get into some really massive horsepower its not really needed, its kind of 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, my personal opinion would be to build the 7.5

after thinking about it for a while, the extra weight might not be what i want... And as you said if im not making big numbers the 7.5 should do me well... Initially i was just seeing if i could get the best deal for the money...
what kinda numbers are you thinking the 7.5 can hold? Im not going to lie i dont have plans for a turbo/n20 setup... but i do plan to do all bolt ons / possibly an engine swap in the future... (not looking into anything too crazy but my miles are getting high so im just planning things out)

With only bolt-ons, even if you go all the way, and even slight engine modifications you'll be fine with the 7.5. Do you or will you track it ? If not then you're especially good, the only time it's an issue is on hard launches, so if you aren't taking it to the track or driving the heck out of the thing you'll be ok.
