Why 18" rims and not bigger?
Victoria brought up something in her "I decided against racing stripes" thread that I have been wondering about since I got here.
It seems that everyone that has custom wheels stayed with or went up to 18". Is there a particular reason why a bigger size wasn't chosen? I ask because I am getting some 20" wheels installed tomorrow. If they will cause me a problem or if there is a reason to stay with 18" then I would like to know so that I can choose a different wheel. |

well those rims with the travel of the suspension may cause a problem and or it may fuck up your speedo and need a recalibration also bigger tires means slower acceleration so you might want to consider new gears in your rear end.

The real reason is 20's are huge wheels, and personally many people don't like the look of them in the wheel wells, and you don't have that much room to lower the car. Yes, 20's will fit, but they are huge in my opinion. A nice subtle drop with some 18's looks good to me. It's really preference. Yes, the added mass will cause you to lose more hp and tq to the wheels, because that is more mass to move. If it's show your goin for, do it, but if its performance your goin for...I wouldn't

My friend has 20" rims and if you hit a big bump you will hit the wheel against the wheel well which is bad... 18" is a perfect fit and smaller also the reason could be 20" are alot more expensive

20's is way way way too huge for a stang. What u also have to look at is if you have alot of potholes where u live because the bigger the rim the smaller the tire the more likely to damage the rim when u hit a pothole!!!!
Think about it!!!

-huge show car wheels -turning radius now sucks cause of rubbing -if you plan to lower your car have fun cutting out the fender wall so you can turn -it's harder to do burn outs -technically i think you get worse gas milage... i can't remeber.. personally its for show.. most of us want the show look but like racing a bit so we stick to smaller rims. get some pics up when you got them on buddy i wanna see this.. i got a v6 at school and some chick put huge boss 20-22" rims on it haha it looks like a SUV without being lowered |

if you want to do anything performance wise with the car 17 is your best bet. The 20's will fit fine like cricket said but you will have to be super careful around pot holes. Also the bigger the rim usually the weaker it is so be careful if you drive it like a mustang you can crack a rim easy on the slightest bump (had a friend do it twice)

Thanks for all of the info and responses. I will change my plans and go to 18" rims. That way I can lower it and put on some springs.

As I was leaving there was a Shelby Cobra pulling in that also looked like it had 20s. |
