removing cats vs gutting cats

I just recently saw a post about removing the cats. Since legally i can't remove mine because of emission checks down here, can i gut all four of the cats?? What will be the effect vs. cutting the cats out?

If you gut out the cats they will no longer work and it's equivalent to replacing them with pipe. It would be obvious to the emission testing equipment since the level of pollutants in the exhaust will be too high.

I don't think he was asking about whether it was legal or not. He sounds like he knows it's illegal to remove or gut them. I think he means sound and/or performance wise, will it have the same results or is one better than the other. I am not positive but I would think cutting them out and replacing with exhaust tubing would be the better of the two options. Although maybe not the cheapest if you are going to gut them yourself.

in our cars at emissions they dont use the wand tester like an older car...they plug into the comp and test it that way...the nice thing about gutted cats is to keep the appearence of cats during the mirror test...btw, either way and you'll need to purchase some MIL eliminators...

The type of testing varies from state to state. Evidently in your state they just plug into the OBD II port and check for codes. In Calif. they plug into the OBD II port and also use a probe in the exhaust to measure emissions with the car on a dynamometer. Thus, even if the converters seemed normal from the outside it wouldn't pass here without functioning converters. In states where they only check for the presence of the converters you can probably get away with gutting them out.

If the converters are gutted out or eliminated then you need to eliminate the signal from the rear oxygen sensors since they would recognize that the converters are not working and trigger a code (MIL eliminators).

I would think that either removing the converters or gutting them would get more exhaust flow.

Gutted cats is the option people go with when they want the car to appear as though it has cats.

also...if your worried about emissions...cut the cats and weld on flanges to the cats...the tubing your putting in place, and the exaust tubing itself...you can pick up flanges from Advance Auto for cheap...something im planning on trying if i ever get a day to go to the exhaust shop...but basically this'll give you the ability to put the cats back in for testing

Texas doesnt do the mirror test, as long as your not throwing codes youll be ok, id go ahead and go offroad h or x, or keep it legal and cut out the precats and throw in a set of high flows, just my .02

Just make your own MIL eliminators, it's much cheaper.
$4.50 DIY O2 Sensor MIL Eliminators

I checked the part numbers at RadioShack today and they are correct, so finding them should be easy. Just an FYI! good luck
