I'm not sure who came up with the rule of thumb concerning gears in a manual vs. automatic, but I wouldn't put 4.10 gears in an automatic if it's just a daily driver. Those gears on the highway would eat that car up. Your rpm's would be higher than a kite, and crappy gas mileage.

i doubt anyone here would care much for a mpg or two loss

As i stated in another thread, 4.10's are more for the track, not for everyday driving. If your looking to upgrade on your daily driver, go with the 3.73's, i think you'll be alot happier.

i think we get your point. what im saying is we all are here for speed, not to worry about losing a mpg or two because of some 4:10 gears making are cars FASTER

Im all for speed too, and im not just talking about gas mileage, i could care less about mileage, what im trying to say is 4.10 gears on a daily driver is hard on the car, especially on the highway with the increased rpm's. over time it will take a toll on your car. as much as i would like to have 4.10 gears, i want to keep my car for awhile and the motor in good condition, that's why i am choosing the 3.73 gears. Do your homework and study up on the pros and cons of the two before you rush into anything.

Im not all for the 3.73's, i would love to have 4.10's, im just stating that those particular gears are hard on a daily driver. Im just putting my two cents in as to what this thread pertains to to help this particular person out, no need to go getting your panties in a bunch.

exactly. this stmiller1974 guy is full of shit.

as i asked in another thread:

what gears do you run?
what tranny do you have?
and what rpms are you at at 75mph?

i have run 4.10s on the street for over a year in GA's hell-hot summers and ran dozens of times down carolina dragway and a couple times at SGMP in cecil, ga. cecil is a 4 hour drive, so dont give the bullshit about streetable gears.

This is my daily driver and it sees more highway time than local time. I would like to take it to the track once all of the mods are complete to see what it can do but I don't plan to be a racer and that isn't my goal.

As I am just looking to improve the performance from stock, I will most likely go with the 3.73 gears if 75 mph is at 3K rpms. I consistently do 80-85 (at 2K rpms) on the highway and sometimes up to 90 if I have to pass a group. That will probably put me around 4K rpms, which is a bit higher than I would like to be on a normal and extended basis.

On 1996-1998 manual transmission Mustangs, a Speedometer Gear or Speedometer Calibration (Speedcal) will adjust your speedometer to the gear you have installed. For 1999+ manual transmission Mustangs, a Speedcal is the only option. For automatic transmission Mustangs, a Chip or Flash Tuner can adjust the speedometer for the gear you have installed.

Whats the deal there....i gotta 03 manual...but cant i use a tuner to set my speedometer right?? that came off of http://www.moddedmustangs.com/ring-a...te-debate.html

I'm pretty sure you can use the x-cal to adjust your speedo

what tranny? i have 4.10s and at 75mph i am at EXACTLY 3k rpms
85 is <3400rpms as well. 120 is less than 4500. i redline at 6k.

these numbers are 100% accurate. i have checked them and compared to stock dozens of times, the mpg does not suffer, and i personally would not take your "estimates" seriously

2400 rpms

from stock ratio, the same rpm goes at 10mph slower on the highway in overdrive.
