4.10 gears

I am considering the purchase of some Ford Racing 4.10 gears. They guy I was talking to said that while these would definitely improve my take-off they would also cause me to lose my upper-end / top speed.

Does anyone know how much I will lose from the top? So long as I can still get up to around 90 without redline then it will be cool.

lol youll be fine if anything youll see your topspeed more often cuz if you hadnt noticed it takes for ever to get there.. ill say itll bump your 0-60 enormously and take off maybe 2-5mph from the top end.. you should really get a t-lok and 4.10s thatll shave off about 1/2 a second of your 1/4 mile time (which is alot)

What is a t-lok? I haven't heard of that before.

If it doesn't cost too much and since the gears are already getting put in then I may do that.

a t-lok costs about 170 but it goes exactly where the gears go so id wait that way you pay less in labor fees cuz they wont need to take your rear end open twice its worth while.. itll make you feel like your car is a new monster

Will the t-lok also affect my top speed or does it strictly affect launch?

Definetly get both at the same time. if your worried about gas or redlining to fast go with a more mild 3.73 gear ratio. its much better than stock but not as hardcore as 4.10'. the rule of thumb is 3.73 for manual's, and 4.10's for automatic. 4.10's in a manual will make your first gear extremely short. theoretically your top speed will not be lowered, since you will reach it faster, therefore you want redline at the same speed. also without a tuner or chip you cant get to your top speed due to the governor. so no worries there. but once you purchase gears, you will need to buy a tuner to change your speedo. the gears will make your speedo think your going slower than you actually are. or take it to a shop and have the recalibrate your speedo. good luck and you will love the difference it makes!

Thanks a lot for the additional info guys!

I am actually planning to purchase a SCT X-Cal v2 wit customized tune from VMPTuning.com. Justin and I have just started discussing my car and the modifications that I intend on making.

I do have an automatic transmission and will likely stay with the 4.10 gearing. My car has the Traction Control System (TCS) as well. Will the t-lok be compatible with the TCS or will I have problems?

t-lok and tcs have no relations to each other. The t-lok is just your differential. It puts power to both wheels to the ground, instead of one for added traction, and an equalization of power.

your fine there TCS is a computer system while t-lok is an actual mechanical device.

have justin turn off tcs as default in your tunes. that way you wont have to manually turn it off every time you start the car.

Check out the other thread entitled "3.73 or 4.10" as that is discussed pretty well there.
