5th gear grind

i got my tranny "fixed" and 5th gear was still grinding going in so the guy said all the new parts in 5th need to break in. so, i waited and its been about 3000 miles and theres still a grind.

now i noticed that if i shift at low rpms into 5th it doesnt grind and if i shift after ive been driving for a while it doesnt grind but it does feel really stiff.

any ideas on what it could be 5th gear that wrong??

I've heard about this problem in many forums, ask him what exactly did he changed, a bad clutch could cause those problems too... just my 2 cents...

5th gear synchro is probably shot. Doesn't sound like the guy who worked on your transmission is being straight with you.

yeah id check and make sure he replaced everything and used quality parts, and if he did and installed them right id go after the clutch next, but if only 5th is doing it then i question him some more and take it back to him and tell him to fix it

It does sound like the synchronizer is going out, maybe even the clutch. not sure but it could be a bent fork. i think the guy who repaired it did shotty work

He said he replaced the synchro and everything with 5th gear but I am about to go raise hell about it. There was never anything wrong with the tranny dad just wanted it inspected and the guy even said everything was perfect. At the time my ca only had 43k on it. Shortly after I got it back it started this crap. Now I really do hate driving because my gear just ruins everything

If I were you, I'd take it to another shop, have them diagnose it, and pay them to fix the problem. If you can prove it the other mechanic did shotty work, I'd threaten to report them to the BBB and so forth. Perhaps you'll get your money back... but I doubt it.
