Cam Bearing Failure
so broke apart my first motor last night, before teardown noticed a ticking/chirping sound coming from the motor, originally beleived to be a bad pulley or related to the a/c system, after still hearing the noise when running the motor with the serp belt off we thought it was a spun bearing or something related.
so once we pulled the cam we saw issues at a few of the cam bearings and we first thought we damaged it with removing the cam, but after we pulled the block and upon further inspection it appears as a few of the bearings started to decentagrate and not just at the oiling holes, but did not see any major problems on the cam journals. i tried to take a picture but couldn't get the camera to focus in. the oil pickup screen had parts of bearings stuck to it. my question is what causes something like this, heat? oiling? over reving? or debris in the oiling system? we are gonna put in some performance bearings and are getting the cam reground anyways to work with the stroker kit. |

guess it was just a crappy bearing, hopefully the performance bearings will last longer... oh well the block is at the machine shop getting prepped for a 408 stroker with new bearings.

I would say due to low oil pressure....what was in the screen..my guess some valve seals..etc?

before replacing the bearing i would atleast try to run the motor with the belt off to help diagnose where the sound is coming from... but depends on how you get it done, the cam bearings themselves are not that expensive if your doing it yourself... however you still need to tear down the front of the motor which includes the cooling system, waterpump, timing cover, chain, cps, and fluids.... then you will need to rent a cam bearing installation tool from your local parts store.
personally if i spun or lost a bearing i would get a reground cam and new bearings/springs from somewhere like rpm-mustangs.com and replace it with those. this post should give you a general understand on what is required during the install: http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...gh-vt3760.html

cams tend to knock, and bearng failures of any sorts is from lack of lube for whatever reason...plugged oil holes, incorrectly installed bearings, age, etc. ....Cam bearings tend to last the longest since traditionally it doesnt recieve the same type of force on it as a rod or main bearing
