random question about gears
hey guys
i was thinking the other day and why is it that 3.73 gears are generally for 5 speeds and 4.10's are generally for automatics? obviously there is the extra gear on the standard but i wasnt really sure. I'm planning on buying some gears soon (I have a manual car) and just want to get all my information straight.

What part of houston are you from man? I'm in Baytown
![]() And I say go with 4.10's. That 3.73 for manual and 4.10's for auto is just a general consensus. You will have an extremely short 1st gear, but there is nothing wrong with having 4.10's in a manual |

^ Tis true, kinda depends what you wanna do with the car too. Drag car doesn't need high end highway speed or mpg, so throwing higher ratio'd gears like 4.10's is fine. However if you do mostly street driving, for the most part 3.73's are suggested. I think for gears its more of personal preference. Too bad they aren't cheap enough to pick and choose which you like best...

It's mainly because the 4r70w has a longer 1st gear than the t5. The auto needs the extra gearing to get out of the hole quicker. A 4r70w with 4.10s has a torque multiplication of 11.644, and a t5 with 3.73s has a multi of 12.4955. You can see that even with the 4.10s, the auto has less multiplication than the manual with 3.73 gearing.
Personally, I'd go with 4.10s on a manual because 1st gear isn't that bad: using VAP's rpm calculator and shifting at 5800, you're at 32.3 mph with 4.10s, and 35.5 mph with 3.73. It's not like you'll be shifting to 2nd as soon as you start moving. Last edited by mooses; August 25th, 2009 at 07:30 PM. |

Go with 3.90s if your worried. They are a little more expensive cause they are a little harder to find. I have 4:10s in my auto and they are steep, i wouldn't want them in a manual.

haha then i must be confused on where it is. pretty sure were going to lonestar though cuz they have late night stuff on friday and i have school stuff to do until late. is HRP closer to the south loop area? do they have open track nights on friday nights? we may not go this weekend but probably soon if they do lol
oh and btw i plan on going with an m112 setup in the future so would the 3.73's or the 4.10's be better? im on a really low budget and dont know where to get 3.90's for the same price

Go with 3.73's with the M112. It has a lot of low end so you don't need a steep gear. Also if you need help with the M112 just let me know and I can help you out |

I'm not sure if i'll be racing or not, but more than likely i'll be out in my 99 Cobra (white). If not that, the 00 v6 (red). I'm leaning towards the Cobra though lol. I don't want to race the cobra until I beef up the suspension a bit more EDIT: I should clarify....If you pay $20 to race you dont pay the $10 on top to get in....just want to get that clear Also, i just checked HRP's site and this friday will be open track

Sorry for the thread steal, but 04mustang, how are those on the highway? i have an auto and really leaning towards 4.10's because i heard they arent as bad as most people make them seem... like maybe 300-500 more rpm's at 70 than stocker gears?

and on the gearing thing even tho it sounds like u got it all cleared away. the 4.10 u would in the future depending how much u put in the car possibly end up toppin out in the quarter. idk i saw a vid idk but it was a twin turbo v6 that topped out in the quarter before it was over at like 120 ish i might be wrong idk someone correct me if i am. idk maybe it is only on the manuals cuz if u look at the old cars they are runnin pretty high gears like 4.10 and ive even seen 4.52
