check your fluid is the first step is it burn or low? if it is get a tranny flush and fill and throw a bottle or Lucas tranny service in it. if isnt ur looking at maybe a bad shift servo or loose or broken band or no tranny pressure or low pressure. but seriously check the fluid.

sounds like your shift bands are completely fubared i had a an 94 explorer that did this it all started when 2nd gear just dropped off the map and the miraculously came back lol get it checked before it goes to the wayward like my tranny did.

try staying in the gas a bit it will shift around 5.2 or 5.3 if it gets past that let out, but mines shifted right at redline before I got my tuner.

it won't hurt it as long as you don't get deep into the redline you get to about 6.5 let out fast you should be no where near there with out a tune. The 3.8 is a strong block. If you want to change your shift bands get an x-cal2 or livewire and you hae control over all that.

you have to pull the plate off the tranny and i dont know i think you may even have to pull the valve body it is DEFINITELY a professional job first try that Lucas tranny service fluid tho it works dreams i should know kept my sunfire kicking heh... is your tranny over full? usually screwed up shift bands only happen if there is way to much fluid or the tranny is heating up and loosing pressure. like for instance my explorer was overheating the tranny bad the fluid was burnt and my tranny cooler was plugged up thats y i blew the servo for second and the bands went all wonky on me.
